hardly - hes learnt his lesson is not a threat to the public and will find it hard to work again - why do i need to pay to keep him in jail now?

You make fair points. Can't we at least flog him or put him in stocks for a week or so though?

How about seize assets and sell them off to recoup the money + interest?

I do love how it is being reported as thought this is special treatment for them.

It isn't

Why even bother putting him in prison? Whats the point of prison anyway? Whats the point of imposing a sentence if it's not going to be served anyway ?

Oh stuff it, lets just let everybody out, it's all a waste of money anyway, people can now be free to do what they like with impunity....happy now ?

How long has he been in? I thought when sentenced you would actually serve half of it (not 25%), unless you were naughty in prison. Does it vary for different categories of prisoner?

Former environment minister Elliot Morley has been freed from prison after serving a quarter of his 16-month sentence for fiddling his expenses.

Morley was jailed in May for claiming £32,000 in bogus mortgage payments relating to his home in Winterton, near Shorpe, North Lincolnshire.

He did have a choice as to whether to abuse his position of considerable power and steal £thousands from the taxpayer; it would be nice to think that he would have had a little more time than under 4 months to reflect on that decision.

I do feel uneasy about the different way people have been treated over this - the Wintertons live near me and they bought a flat on expenses then transferred it to a trust in their kids' names and paid rent to the trust!

£66,000. And they weren't even asked to pay it back, never mind prosecuted, even though it was technically a breach.

I think many Tory MP have got away with this stuff big-time because it got lost in their generally enlarged and complicated financial circumstances. Labour MPs were much more exposed.

pete have you have been in prison if no then how do you make this statement ?

By the way I think if the courts sentence you then you should serve all the time they ordered, regardless of what crime as they would have already taken that into account.

from a dear friends experience..

i know what you say makes sense although there should be time taken off for good behaviour as that benefits everyone. that said i dont think people appreciate its the process and the fact hes been to prison that will be the punishment not whether its 12 month compared to 4 imho. the punishment will last a lifetime.

Quoted, as it's an interesting point but I simply don't believe it. The wealth of the socialist CUNextTuesdays who ruined our country is discgraceful given the policies the pedelled, and the only extra exposure they gain is to the ridicule of the waiting electorate.

8 out of the top 9 repayments where Tories. The only exception was Barbara Follet at no2.
