I'm trying to figure out what the problem may be. Its not specific to what pedals/shoes or whether im using cleats or not as its happened on my MTB as well as my road bike, but I do tend to get quite a nagging pain in the base of my foot after about 20-25 minutes into a ride. It only seems to be my left foot. Anyone else had similar?
My right foot, or specifically my outside 3 toes, go numb after a couple of miles on the road bike.
I spoke to Mike at Velomotion, who set my bike up, and he suggested a few things... One of which was to use Specialized BG Footbeds. I put these in last Thursday and went for a ride. If anything the numbness was worse, and there was pain as well! On Friday I added a 1.5mm Valgus shim to the right foot as well (these come with the footbeds) and went for a short ride. I found a definite improvment with it in.
However it's still not perfect. It's really bugging me as it's stopping me doing longer rides and was the reason I din't do L2B this year. I might well see about moving the cleats a little, as this was also suggested.

Try moving your cleats back. It's a trick lots of randonneurs use. I was getting numb/hot foot problems on 200km rides before I moved them back. Had none at 300 and 600 since I moved them back.
I use mtb spds. I'm on the rear set of holes, and about 1/2 a cm away from the back of the cutouts. Some people ram them right back. If you try it, remember to drop your saddle accordingly.
