So SWMBO and I are off to the Bahamas in a few weeks to meet her parent's. They are very kindly treating us to a few days in Miami. We want to visit a proper American diner while we're there - does anyone have any suggestions? I've suggested Dennys but the other half would like something less mainstream. We're staying in this hotel: http://thehotelofsouthbeach.com/

Denny's?
Little Chef sucks balls, Right?
Move a little further back along the perineum until it starts to get a bit musky.
You have arrived at Denny's.

Don Schulas, might not be the proper dinER experience, but it was a pretty good meal (Amazing, but pricey) food was top notch, atmosphere less so.

I was there a week ago, and there's so many chain places you can to it's unreal. We basically googled the Man Vs Food episodes and went there. You cannot go wrong.

Went to an Arbys today and it was really nice! Also If there is any Saltgrass Steakhouses' (Only discovered them in Houston) then go, easily the best steak I have eaten.

ETA: Applebys was pretty good as well.

Well recommended;

Jimmy's Eastside Diner
7201 Biscayne Blvd
Miami fl 33138

aanother recommend for Eleventh Street Diner....funnily enough on 11th Street...but a great old fashioned stainless steel diner. Typical 60's feel........Pulled Pork Sandwich sounds soo wrong but so nice. and the Philly Steak is top....

If you want a proper diner experience, go to a small, local diner. We had a great one in Baldwinsville. Good food, and much better than Denny's, ET al.

Are they really that bad? Admittedly I last went to a Denny's about 10 years ago so my memory must be getting a little hazy!

Way ahead of you, I've already decided to try The Burger and Beer Joint as it's a couple of miles away! I've been banned from trying The MotherBurger.

Maybe I'm being a little tough on Denny's. Their Grand-Slam breakfast is a pretty good beer-sponge at 3.00am, but they are very much an eat-it-and-beat-it resource. They are franchises that are unforgivably inconsistent in terms of quality, portion size and service level. Some are OK, some are not. All are cheap.

Examples: Waitress's thumb in your food as she brings plates to the table. Kitchen staff member leaving the toilet without washing his hands after what sounded like a severe bout of dysentery (we left, with our order being placed on the table). Cook's perspiration sizzling on the hot-plate along with the over-easy eggs etc.

Some Denny's 'restaurant/diners' look very retro-Americana from the roadside (stainless steel facade) - but they are less than authentic.

Well, after all this, I'm off to the diner* shortly. All of this has made me hungry.

  • It calls itself a diner, but isn't really like the diners in NJ. I spent half an hour the other night trying to find my regular diner in NJ from a few years back and think it's this one:
http://www.clairmontdiner.com/

That place was fantastic - I went in their for sunday dinner once, and it came out on 7 plates. I finished maybe a fifth of it.

I bloody love Denny's and have been to loads of them. They are not exactly high class but portions sizes are decent and the food consistent, admittedly I have never watched them cook or paid enough attention to waitresses thumbs but will do so in future.

The Northen most Denny's is in Fairbanks Alaska!

I prefer Friendly's than Denny's. However, cracker-barrel was always my face for breakfast!

Cracker Barrel is awesome, one of my favourite guilty pleasures, made worse by the fact my OH lives 5 minutes from one. Very little beats an inch thick, bicycle seat sized lump of virginia ham with all the trimmings and a side of pancakes when you've had a few the night before Love the smell too! biggrin

Trouble with Cracker Barrel is they over-cook the bacon. Stick your fork in it and it goes off like an IED - razor-like shards of pig fat flying in all directions.
Good for rocking chairs and patch quilts - crap for bacon. Most of 'em down here look like converted industrial units, which adds nowt to the Cracker ambience either.
For brekkie, I vote Bob Evans.

Only bacon I ever eat snaps, even British bacon. If it doesn't snap, then it ain't right.

So I'm currently in The Bahamas, we're flying to Miami early tomorrow morning and hoping to get breakfast at The 11th Street Diner. Thanks for the recommendations guys!
