Hi Guys
As my 1st summer as a TVR S1 owner draws to a close, i want to thank all you guys on the PH Forum.
you have helped me to fix Yellow Connector syndrome,door glass replacement,poor fuel consumption ,hot start probs. New bonnet hinges, door hinges. during the up & coming winter i intend to replace exhaust system, drive couplings. & try to get the roof panels water tight.
Can anyone tell me how to get decent radio reception. New Radio/Speakers & ariel fitted. but distortion
is unbelivable, 1/4 vol.and the radio has to be switched off.

Is the aerial earthed properly where it's mounted to the body? On a steel car, it earths through the mounting itself. A fibreglass car needs a separate earth - a good thick one - to earth the aerial body to the chassis, so that the outer sheath of the coaxial cable can properly shield the radio signal in the central core, from external electrical interference.
I repaired my original radio/cassette on my S2 this weekend. I found the same distortion problem at minimal volume. In my case it eventually turned out to be something as simple as the mesh covers on both sides dented in and touching the front of the speeker cones. removing the speaker covers cured the distortion and some gentle tapping with a hammer re-formed the dome shape mesh to clear the speakers. May not be the same problem as yours but simple to check as speaker covers just clip on and their position at the bottom of the doors means they are easily dented by people getting in and out.
NB; I also found some interference from the ignition which was reduced by connecting a wire between the mesh layer under the bonnet insulation and an earth point. For anyone who is interested a drive belt which will fit the original cassette player is RD76 from Cricklewood electronics (50p + 3.50 postage)

Mine had some mesh stuff (only as thick as cooking foil) over the transmission tunnel, guess that was for suppressing interference?I think mine still has the original insulation stuck to the underside of the bonnet. this appears to have a fine metal mesh between the felt and the fibreglass. There was also a remnant of wire connected to the bonnet stay bracket on the bonnet. the mesh was too fragile to actually attach an earth wire to so I just pushed a long length of bare copper wire into the edge between the mesh and the fibreglass and than attached the other end to an earth connection on the chassis. It reduced the interference (though it did not eliminate it).
