Heinz Beanz - a con
Discussion
Just picked up a can of Heinz Beanz for my beans on toast, ce soir.
Noticing the contents were a tad watery, the given weight on the can is 415g. I'm sure that in times of yore, the contents weighed 440g. Yet the price is the same... If not more...
Does brand manager du jour really think the consumer isn't going to notice?
Shameful.

Loads of companies have reduced the weight/size of the products but kept the prices they same. Apparantly it's because customers complain when they increase the cost of things, so they reduced the size but kept the cost the same.

HP beans used to be so much nicer than Heinz, however I haven't been able to find them for ages
HP Beans were a licensed brand to Premier Foods, the license expired in early 2006, in October 2005 the same company launched a major assault on the market with Branston Beans as part of an attempt (quite successful) to bring a number of products under the same brand which they owned whilst negating the loss of the HP license.
Branston beans are a step ahead of Heinz.
PH, beanz matter.
Heinz beans are rubbish, last tin I had was like eating lead shot in a tin of tomato flavoured water. I actually prefer store brand stuff, but branston are way better.
Scaling down the size / shaving a few grams off food is the norm when they're not making enough, or they need to account for increased costs at production etc. A few folks get peeved about it (as per Watchdog lastnight), but ultimately they'll still buy them - very seldom is it the case, particularly with bigger brands, that they'll drop shed loads of buyers, if they up the price they will.

Are you saying that potentially Branston Beans are rebranded HP beans? I'm off to google.Branston beans are a step ahead of Heinz.

Not exactly... IIRC Branston launched in October 2005 and the HP license expired in April 2006. The Branston launch by the same company was so that they owned the brand rather than having HP on a renewable license.I believe that when companies do this they have to change the recipe slightly, depends on individual contracts/agreements.

Best thing you can do to make beans better?
When you get them home, put them in your cupboard upside down. They will have been stored the "right" way up for a while, so putting them the other way up lets the "juice" trickle back down, evening out the flavour and "wateryness".
Trust me. It really makes a huge difference.
