at its maximum zoom the widest apeture would be f16! (f8 + 2 stops lost for the 2x convertor) That would't be good for anything you would want an long lens for, except maybe astro stuff. I can imageine its pretty woeful optically too.

Advert says 'f/8-32'. I doubt very much whether it's constant aperture so it might be f8 at 650mm and f11 at 1300mm. Stick the 2x jobbie on and it's f22 at the long end.

Handy for photographing very bright things a long way away though, ie the sun

Mind you the advert says 'Fantastic for all types of photographic situations' so maybe I'll take one to the church next time

I do a bit of astro stuff and it certainly wouldn't be any good for that. I try to shoot wide open as stars move pretty quickly believe it or not!

Fair enough i didn't realise that, never done any astro stuff myself, apart from a few shots of the moon!

Really! Isn't the earths rotation what causes the stars to "move" across the sky? obviously everything is moving away from everything else from the big bang, but i would have thought that the former would cause more visible movement. It's been a while since i have done physics!

Everything is moving relative to everything else.

You can either get a motorised mount to track the stars, or lay a track across the Atlantic and buy a rocket sled. Former is probably easier

You're lucky, you only have to lay track over 2,000 miles of Tasman Sea and then you're on land... hopefully by the time you reach Perth you've got the shot!
