I've bought one of these.....



....for £18 110dB alarm disc lock and a pair of these....



...red slick road tyres for £10.99! It took six fewer minutes to get to work this morning than the knobbleys and if anyone does manage to get past the two locks, alarm and tracker chip to nick my bike; the bright red tyres may be easier for the authorities to spot.

Due to the hours I work I don't get to use shops much so these were eBay purchases.

What would you spend you £30 on?

Mirrors. I bought one of those little round ones specifcally so I could see my little girl in the trailor. It's really good but obviously aimed at her however rather than at the traffic behind so I'm considering one I can mount on my helmet.

Butterfly bars for the hybrid: a single hand position wasn't acceptable for my first big ride on Friday (57 miles!).

A disc lock on a MTB seems a recipe for false alarms, hope it works out better than I predict.

Norfolk Police have a Zero tolerance for missing reflectors. Also I leave for work at half four in the morning so any excuse for a dozy driver not to see me.

The vibration of getting rained on was enough to set it off earlier but I don't mind the more people know it's alarmed the better the deterant.

Already have a right hand mirror. I'm getting boring with age.

to comply with the law, you only need a front and rear reflector and reflectors on the pedals, though the latter is very rarely contested by police anymore given most people use spds/clipless pedals. you dont need reflectors on the wheels.

/\ This. I saw the reply to your earlier post too. Wheel reflectors MUST be fitted when the bike is sold new, can't recall the exact law that applies, but as soon as the bike is out of the suppliers hands, RVLR applies and only requires the cycle to be fitted with a rearward facing red reflector and two amber reflectors per pedal, one visible from the front and one from the rear, to British Standards. You are free to take the front white and white/amber wheel reflectors off the bike as soon as you buy it, apparently. Pedal reflector rule does not apply if your bike was built before a given date, 1986 if memory serves, but I stand to be corrected. The rules, as they are written into law, would make the use of SPD/SPD SL/Look/Speedplay type pedals illegal on a modern bicycle, but I've yet to hear of anyone being prosecuted, nor even warned, over their use. I play it safe and use amber 'slap wraps' on my ankles, in the hope that any police person observing me in the dark would see that I am taking reasonable care of my safety, and trying to comply with the spirit of the law.

In response to the question posed by the OP: I would buy a http://www.wiggle.co.uk/exposure-quick-release-han... for £18, then start saving for the http://www.wiggle.co.uk/exposure-strada-mk3-front-... to fit to it. I would then have a brilliant light for riding on dark winter nights, plus a spare mounting bracket to allow quick transfer to my second bike.

I made my old front light out of a million candle power torch (I was working in a club and used to cycle home at three in the morning). Suprising how many cars dipped their headlights when I turned that on.

On the reflective pedal theme, both my road and MTB shoes have reflective portions to their rears - could this be to make up for the missing pedal shinyness?
If I only had 30 to spend at the moment, it would go on chain degreasant, and some wet lube ready for the winter.
