Nikon D7000 - what alternatives?

Going to go a look at a Nikon D7000 this weekend with a view to buying one. It's a first 'proper' camera and my budget is up to £1,000.

It seems to be highly rated and apparently has an excellent help menu that describes the functions and what effect they have, which I particularly like the sound of.

I just wondered what else I should be considering?

I have a Nikon D7000 and I highly rate it, fantastic camera.

canon 60d, sony a55, pentax k-5 are all ones to look at I think

I use the D7000 more than my D700 at the moment
