Anyone seen it yet? I'm off to watch it tonight, and I just wondered if anyone else had already watched it?

Yep, saw it last night.

I thought it was excellent entertainment, the script had some real moments of dry humour. There's far more combat action than in previous films, but I thought some of the acting performances could have been better, notably senator amidala - she came across a bit sterile to me.

Special effects are stunning, and although that phrase gets banded around alot these days, they really are. A new standard has been reached in some areas of the film.

I can't say too much more,'cos I don't to give any of it away. Just go and enjoy

I'd had a quick look here http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/entertainment/reviews/newsid_1985000/1985197.stm All the comments were love it/hate it.

Nice to hear a more balanced view.

I was thinking it would just be a good bit of fun, with some entertaining fight scenes. I thought Amidala was pretty wooden in the last film anyway, and I'm not expecting great things that young guy playing Anakin.

I loved the original Star Wars and especially Empire. They had a real gritty feel to them, due to real models and the grain of the film when shot on location in the deserts. Han Solo's cutting humour added another level too.

Things started to slip a little with the next film and the debut of those Ewoks though.

The new Phantom Menace was dumbed down yet again, being squarley aimed at kids this time, what with that ridiculous cartoon character. Ruined the whole thing for me. A real shame.

I'd love to buy the original two on dvd but they won't release them singuarly. I don't particuarly want to buy the complete box set when it arrives.

Mind you, I'll just nip along to my local odeon, along with the rest of the world, just to see how much I don't like it.

I have never seen a Star Wars film – not one of 'em – and when I found out (when the missus went crazy – she luvs 'em) that they were making more of 'em I had to think 'Why?'

Hasn't it all been done to death ... is there any special effect which hasn't been seen

To take someone's name one here in vain 'Plotless' – they just MAKE IT UP!!

All this Battlestar Galactica Sci Fi Buck Rogers B*ll*x just leaves me cold – show me an old Ealing film tho' – that's more like it.

Mind you, thinking about it – I don't think the big epic type film is me really – I've never seen a Harrison Ford thingy bloke – with the pyramids and the rolling ball etc – see, can't even remember the bloody name of him ... errr, no it's gone.

No, still can't think of the bloke's name.

One good thing I can say about the first Star Wars film was that Alec Guinness was in it – an Ealing stalwart

Well, at least we have to pay tribute to George Lucas' integrity as a person who enjoys completing a project: he couldn't afford to make the 9 movies from the start and now he is doing his best to give his "baby" the coherence and accomplishment it deserves.

I don't particularly enjoy science fiction movies (except maybe Peter Jackson's jewel "Bad taste" ), but hats off to Lucas for having conducted this incredible work.

(by the way there is a picture of him when he was in his early twenties where he sits in an early Cobra...just for the little story )

The trouble is the films seen in sequential order are disjointed as a set, in terms of cinematography and language. They start of looking gritty and real and end up like a Panten Pro-V advert, featuring Roger Rabbit. The quality of dialougue goes rapidly down hill too. Lucas has failed dismally when looked at as a set critically. Entertaining though.

7/10. Some fairly flat bits, (but which are needed to get all the massive series plot points across), but it is sooo much better than Phantom Menace (5/10)
Oh, and dont underestimate little green guys

saw it last night.
enjoyed it, as with all the star wars films.
some of the acting was a little 'characterless', the love interest lasted too long. but I guess it had to be included to make the connections for the rest of the episodes, as with some of the long story / plot setting scenes.
would, and will, see it agian.
some of the dialogue was too 'modern', when compared to the earlier films.

Well, having watched it last night, I have to say that it was entertaining, but I didn't think the plot hung together very well. Characters seemed weak too. I'm not sure whether this was down to the script or the acting.

The only characters that were any good were Yoda and Palpatine, and they were out of the first three films (or last depending on your point of view). Even Obi Wan has been ruined by Ewan trying to ape Alec Guiness. It doesn't ring true, and I would have preffered him to simply be himself than try to do a Rory Bremner.

I think the new films are missing the charcters, acting and dialogue that made the first three films great. No amount of whizz bang special effects (fun as they are) can compensate.

I think that is George Lucus' greatest failing. With the original trilogy, George had very little money (certainly for the 1st film) so he had to compensate with clever use of sets, good dialogue, character work, etc. As the old saying goes "necessity is the mother of invention".
Now that he has tons of cash, he seems to spend all his efforts on special effects and the characterisation and dialogue seems to have taken a back seat. I think the films are poorer for it, unfortunately.

That won't stop me from going and seeing it tomorrow though (tickets booked earlier in the week).
