Saw a glimpse of this on the news this morning.

It would be good if people took note of the facts, but I doubt that will happen.

...and as others have been saying for years, you can actually see the long decline in traffic KSIs decelerate when cameras came along.

If you plot the actual decline and where it would have gone if cameras hadn't become the main focus of road safety, you can estimate how lives could have been saved if they'd never been introduced.

ETA: I've no doubt the BBC will run with this heavily... rolleyes

The problem is though that in certain situations we do need devices such as this.

So many people seem intellectually incapable of slowing down when entering a village that the one set of cameras that I fervently believe in are the ones on the entry and exit of villages that are on fast roads. Without them too many people never slow down and are bloody dangerous. In those situations they work extremely well and have almost certainly prevented serious harm to people who live in those places.

They serve to re-base mentality and bring people down to the correct speed and most then maintain that speed until they exit. When they stopped the cameras in Oxford there was an almost instant increase in the speed at which thick people drove through some of the villages.

It's the same with speed bumps they are a massive annoyance but the simple fact is that there are so many thick, ignorant and selfish people in cars in modern Britain that many of them have to exist to get people to drive at a speed which is safe.

I think the practical answer is that there is a time and a place for these measures and a sensible review to weed out and remove the pointless applications would be prudent, although another side of me says that scameras are no different from the lottery as they are a volountary tax.

The other matter to be very wary of is that if scameras are deemed not to work for safety and speed control then they will be using this evidence as an arguement for more and more average speed cameras and the Gallileo satallite system.

My gut feeling is that in 10 years we will look back very fondly at scameras and kick ourselves for our short sightedness in getting rid of them.

I agree a good place for a camera is when entering a 30mph village from a NSL road. And I have no problem with them in most urban situations. But on NSL roads in the middle of nowhere and motorways they're just cash cows.

Part of the blame for this has - IMO - got to lie with the over use of 30 limits.

If 30 limits were used more sparingly, or actually started when they were needed, they might command more respect.

Remove all speed cameras, place them all around schools, reduce limit in these areas to 20mph.

be more than happy to comply with that.

I have to confess that I have not noticed excess usuage of 30 zones in the areas that I drive around in.

"Mike Penning, the road safety minister, said: “For the first time we are shining the light of transparency on the performance of speed cameras.

“People want to know that if their tax money is being spent on speed cameras that they are actually making their roads safer, not just raising money. "

I'm just trying to imagine, for the benefit of those who go on about voting for the colour of ties, someone from the last administration saying that.

It's not speed camera's that p,*ss me off. It is the fact they are sited on open roads rather than outside schools. hospitals, an on suicide-bend B-roads etc.

The reason they aren't working is because of stuff like this

http://news.stv.tv/scotland/north/233608-triple-fa...

A mother and her two children were killed near the end of our road. Her car hit a patch of oil and slide across the road hitting another car.

To stop it happening again we regualrly now have a scamera van parked up at the end of our road

Whereabouts is that? Round here (Dorset, Somerset and Hants) there are some howlers.

I wouldn't speed through a village, but when a settlement so small as to not have a name has 1 mile of 30 limit, or a village's limit starts half a mile before the first house, something's wrong.

Southampton's good for barriered 30 limited dual carriageways, too.

Could it be that a lot of people in the West Country still believe the world will end if you travel faster than a horse can? wink

Link wont open for me but I can imagine what it says.

I don't expect logic and a considered responce. IIRC that site that constantly bangs on about speed was started by a woman who husband was killed when a truck driver had a heart attack in a truck which had faulty brakes and no MOT.
So speed kills obviously.
