As a child my parents would visit a local farm shop every Saturday for supplies, sometimes mid week too. I've always loved them, the smell, the dirt, the simplicity, the Farm shops were just as great too...

And now as an adult I appreciate the fresh local produce at decent prices.

There are plenty of farm shops locally, but today I tried one a bit different.

This one was a Butchers with attached farm shop on a working farm. What you see grazing is what you see under the counter...

The Buffalo Rib (behind pink tag) looked lovely.

Forgot to get a pic of all their lovely own made sausages.

They stock lots of lovely alcohol too, including the Chase range.

I've purchased some Buffalo Burgers and some of this

There's a Tea Room with a range of the farm's produce on the menu, kids had the home raised Sausage Rolls which they've declared are the best ever!

Other farm animals included Llamas, Ostrich, Deer (all according meats also available to buy and on the menu)

Next to the Tea Room is this building, housing another available steak, on the menu in the butchers as well as the cafe...

Yep, Crocodile. And all just over ten miles from my home. Awesome. (OK so it's not as local as the one 2 miles away, but that's just a shed).

Well worth a visit with kids too as lots of play stuff, a fort, ride on tractors, etc (as long as you can disassociate them from what they're cooing at is what's on the menu)

I do love a farm shop. We have a few farm shops round our way and go there because the stuff they have is good and we're prepared to pay for better quality over the cheap supermarket tat. But it's more of a "treat" type of visit - maybe once every couple of weeks, then a regular shop. Would spend too much money otherwise.

Awesome looking meat display - plenty of choice there.
Not short of booze either, well stocked biggrin

I do wonder what Crocodile Fillet tastes like?

This is the one I go to, not the nearest by a long shot - about 15 miles from home but theres a few cracking little B-roads in between.

Like the OP, sells all types of produce:

I really want to go back and try some - restaurant fillet/burger price was £14.95.

Their shop sells Ostrich and Kangaroo too, and much Game when in season (now I believe).

Don't get me wrong, I buy supermarket fruit and veg, including much irradiated stuff from Lidl, and couldn't afford to shop at the above place every week - but this was a cracking farm shop with a great difference.

The farm shop where my parents shop out on the B660 (awesome roads) still have prices from the '70's, is still in the same roadside shack, and I think is still in the same family. Made a big stew with their produce over the winter which was delicious.

I've just returned from a supermarket visit where I noted the price of the Lamb Mince was £2 a kilo more expensive (and not so appealing looking) than that of the butcher in my parents village - so it's not always a case of being a costly treat.

And Crocodiles at a Farm Shop! That's just too cool.

Sounds great. I really need to find some in the Hampshire / Berkshire / Surrey area. There's one on the way up to Reading from Basingstoke but it's not very big and not that good. I don't know of any others although I'm sure there are plenty. Maybe I should google for it. smile

If it is anything like Alligator it will have the texture of chicken but taste like very strong prawny/langoustine type taste.

I've had crocodile. I recall it being very tasty but can't remember much else.

One meat that did stick in my mind though was ostrich. Very lean meat, has the look and texture of beef steak yet definitely tastes like a bird. An intriguing and tasty combination - I liked it a lot.

O/T is there a special name for that "foliage" around the meat, and where do butchers purchase it? I've never seen such a thing elsewhere?

On the way back to Shropshire this afternoon, we visited a "farm shop" just off the A442 between Bridgnorth and Sutton Maddock.

Now, mrs k & I love farm shops that sell their muddy veg straight from the field and meats / cheeses etc from Shropshire producers (i.e. Wenlock Edge Farm for meats and Mrs Moyden's for cheese).

Examining the county of origin on the packaged products, I'd say 90% were from outside Shropshire. The origin of the meats was un-named. The charcuterie was also outside the county (which is odd considering Wenlock Edge Farm produces meats of exceptional quality). The pork pies were from Broseley, though.

We bought some local veg, and two rib-eye steaks for dinner this evening.

The steaks were no better than our butchers, where one can always trace the meat "from the gate to the plate", the veg was ok, but no better than usual.

But the "farm shop" was all polished wooden shelves, and jars of chutney with faux cotton tops tied with elastic bands, and pre-packed "luxury dark-chocolate tiffin nibbles" manufactured in Essex.

Our favourite Farm Shop is in Leebotwood.

Hand-written signs precede a farmyard with chickens and geese (and a Collie with a real liking for belly-rubs) running amok, and a small shop selling chicken / duck / goose / bantam eggs, home made lemon drizzle cake, home-made chutneys, and muddy veg.

Ah, already recommended. The deli is good (try the scotch eggs) and the butcher but I'm not totally sold on the veg.
Great little wine shop attached as well.
They have regular events (ride on the tractor, see the animals etc) plus tastings. I often take a hoon over if I've got nothing else to do.
