Firstly, brush up on your French. Few natives speak English, since French is a second language for many, the main (incomprehensible) dialect being something akin to Occitan.

I'd hire a car, drive around the mountain roads and soak up the wonderful aroma of the maquis (wild herbs) and general atmosphere. Expect herds of goats / wild pigs in the road in the upper reaches.

The chestnut is an important product in Corsica, and is used to make bread, cakes, beer, and liqueur. Try these, also donkey salami. redface Moreover, the excellent local wines.

Corsica doesn't have public toilets, so bear that in mind when stopping at that scenic picnic spot / lovely beach. Some filthy Frenchie with dysentery will have been there before you. However don't let that put you off places like La Rondinara (eastern side of the island) - one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen.

Elsewhere, strong rips and undertows can catch out the unwary. Ask the locals before swimming.

That's great advice thank you. We've got a car hired and will be staying in a small villa (with pool) in the Saint Florent area very close to the vin yards. I've a fair understanding of French so should be able to get by in shops and restaurants.
Really looking forward to it, in dire need of a holiday this year.
