Driving to Glasgow airport last night, stopped at some traffic lights, put the clutch in, couldn't get it in first! Eventually got it in, carried on, came to some roadworks and so I selected 1st before I stopped, sat without the brakes on and started moving forward very slowly! It got worse as the journey progressed to the point where I had no choice but to do clutchless gearchanges!

Can someone answer a few questions for me...

1. How do you select first without using the clutch?!

2. Where should I get the clutch fixed?! I'm driving to Glasgow tomorrow and will need to be able to use the clutch!

3. How much is it likely to cost roughly?!?! I'm thinking about going to Kwik Fit but I don't think they do clutches and I don't fancy paying extortionate mechanics prices, or Mr Ford!!!

My Car is a 1.4 Orion ('93)

Cheers
Stuart!

Pretty standard engine in that Orion, think how many Escorts you see around.

I would have said no more than £70 fitted even at a chain.

Matt.

Sorry, I meant select first at a standstill without using the clutch! To me it seems almost impossible! It would be like a digital drivetrain, on or off, you can't feed the power in when there is no clutch!!!

I was forced to push the gearstick as far into first as I could at one point when stopped, this made a slight contact and started the car moving, but I had to rev the nuts off the engine to make any progress!!!

Double De-Clutching! I've tried it and it didn't work!! It works sometimes going down the 'box, but not going up and not for selecting first whilst standing still!!!

£70 seems reasonable! I don't think it's an engine out job! There appears to be enough room to drop the 'box without removing the engine!!!

I have done this a few times, last on my GTIR when the clutch went.

The only way to get going from a standstill is turn the engine off and start the car in gear, once you get going its fine. Try not to do it to much and dont even bother to do it on a hill!

You can change gear if you get the revs right, just make sure you are running the engine high enough so you can go up a gear.

Coming down is not as easy, if you are coming down from say third to second, slow down as much as possible and just rev the engine and slot it into second, like double declutching.
Its all about revs, and incresing the lay shaft with the drive shaft, or something like that. Just be gentle as if you force it it will make it harder and will just complain!

You can do it.!

Hopefully I shouldn't need to stop on the way to Kwik Fit (Mental note to self - Phone Kwik Fit) but the ONLY set of traffic lights are close to the top of a damn hill!!!

Changing gears once moving is easy!! 2000 revs into second, 2200 into third, 2500 into 4th and 2700 into 5th!

Anyway, i'll just have to see how it goes!!!

Turn off the engine, put it in first and start it, that'll get you rolling in 1st gear, then double declutch (or just crash depending on how much you like your car )

Had a clutch changed at a place in Larkhall a few years ago, miles cheaper (£80 compared to Kwikfit's £150) than anything else around and did a good job.

Trouble is ... I can't remember their name, let alone contact details. They had a nice modern looking branch in East Kilbride, where I was living at the time, but when I asked there about the clutch they referred me to their main branch in Larkhall - unpreposessing dump stuffed into someone's back yard!

Agree with the above - start the engine with the car in first gear. Not fun, but it can be done, so anticipate like mad. Don't even bother working down through the gears - just knock it into neutral as you decelerate, then select the gear you want when it's time to accelerate again.

How long where you typing?!?!

i don't need to crash as long as I get the revs right!! driving like that most of the way back last night!!! Using the clutch makes more noise than not at the mo!!!

Down to the second bottom row of the keyboard... along towards the right... see the '.' key? You can use that one to end sentences as well...

I tend to leave the window open for a bit while doing other stuff - that way I look like a right muppet when I post exactly the same as some else 10 mins later
