I'm off for 3 nights shortly, staying centrally.

Any recommendations for 'must sees' / places to eat? Which museums are worth bothering with, and which not?

I'll eat anything, but would appreciate recommendations to sample Berlin's kebab culture / German food offerings.

Thanks thumbup

fab city !

jewish memorial (the museum is a must IMO and very cleveryly done, take a big box of tissues), brandenburg gate, hitlers bunker, checkpoint charlie, the last remains of the wall, tiergarten (theres a great cafe in the centre of it that sells simple but nice sausage+beer), top of the TV tower, a stroll down unter den linden, the rheistag

try and hire some bikes in alexanderplatz and do a tour of the city and learn about all the history ... kind of depressing but utterly fascinating/riveting

not sure about food, wherever i ate seemed pretty good .... great ice cream parlours as well

make sure you check out some nightlife, places like White Trash, Mine haus

the only gallery i went to was the New National .... greta building but despite a few Klee's and Kandinskys I wasnt that impressed by the collection, lots of very heavy depressing german art, not my kind of thing

The Stasi Museum is worth a look too.
I went when the Christmas Markets were on so can't help on the food front as we lived off street food and gluwein smile

Thanks for the recommendations, all. What a fabulous place!

In three days (in baking heat I might add) we managed to squeeze in:

- Walk down Unter Den Linten, a neb at the fabulous interior of the DZ Bank, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and Tiergarten

- The DDR Museum (a fascinating look at daily life in the DDR), the Holocaust Memorial and (excellent) Information Centre below, Checkpoint Charlie and the Hitler Bunker

- A bus trip around the major attractions, stopping off at Charlottenberg to gawp at the Palaces and visit the exquisite Broehan Museum. Bits of the Wall are still standing, elsewhere its course is marked, and there's lots of information about it: the escape attempts are fascinating

- Plus lots of coffees with cake, currywurst, and beer. 'Brauhauses' are springing up everywhere, where they brew their own beer on the premises and match these with hefty German specialities. No diet option available - it's all fried meat with potatoes - but good nonetheless.

Anyone thinking of going to Berlin, do. Not really a place to go with children, but for a couples or lads weekend, it's perfect.

Checkpoint Charlie. Get your passport stamped with all the stamps that you'd have needed when the wall was up !! And the TV tower in Alexanderplatz. I have a tip for this, the queue to go up it is massive all the time. But, if you book breakfast, or lunch, then they will give you a time to show up, so you can have a wonder, then go straight up without queuing.

Lots mentioned already, but if you want a proper 'berlin' nightclub (I don't know quite know what that means) try Berghain in (I think) Friedrichschain, which has a lot of other cool bars. It's a big old abandoned power station or something. You might not get in though, so have a backup. They're a bit odd like that.

berghain door policy is basically "no english". people we spoke to in the queue reckoned we wouldn't get in so we took their advice and split into 2's, didn't say a word when going up the steps etc. the first pair got turned away, then the next, then the last of us. my mate questioned why only to be told [pretty much verbatim, in a high camp german accent] "do you let just anyvun into your house? well, this is our house"

it then didn't help that we pissed ourselves, did impressions of the anarchists from the big lebowski and my jewish mate asked if it's because he's jewish.

anyway, best club for me in berlin is kaffee burger. can't beat doo wop, country and rockabilly at 4am as you watch some gay bloke try to pull your wasted mate.

And you wonder why they didn't want you in? You sound like a class act.

I started writing my advice, then saw the OP had already been and returned. I went to Berlin for 3 days in December, and will definitely be going back - loved it.

I'm sure they do when you liken them to Nazi's after being refused entry.

I think you will find they were nihilists.

No wonder they didn't let you in!
