street parking in the winter

Question, new to London and the UK so it may seem like a bit of a stupid one.
In the winter, I'd like to put a cover on the car to protect it against some of the damage from the snow, etc... How do I still display my parking permit? Cut a hole in it precisely where the permit is? How do others get around this?

My cockpit cover had a hole cut in it to show the tax disc so I'd do the same if I needed to show a permit.
