Mountain Biking in Lake District

Aiming to head up at the end of the month to the Lake District for a few days of mountain biking, probably going to be camping.

Anybody got experience of decent routes for mountain biking.

Been to lakes few times on foot, but never on bike. Any advice welcome.

There's so much riding to be done up there it's hard to know where to start.

There are of course some forest trails such as Whinlatter/Grizedale but if you want to venture out then my advice would be to speak to the guys at Wheelbase in Staveley and Bike Treks in Ambleside. They'll undoubtedly point you in the right direction of the good stuff.

If you fancy a lung buster of a climb try Walna Scar, the descent on the other side is well worth it.

Tbh, where only really in it for the descents, so willing to put up with some stupid climbs.

Borrowdale bash is a classic, basically a lap of Derwentwater (half way up the hills around it).

Whinlatter is ace and IMVHO Grizedale less so.

You need to hit the mountains then! High Street, Skiddaw and Helvellyn can all be ridden on - Go on I dare ya and report back with pictures!

Endless amounts of riding up there ,where abouts are you staying ? as this would help as to where to suggest , as sads already Borrowdale Bash , Ullswater Singletrack , High Street , Jenkins Crag /Garburn Pass etc . or another way perhaps is to look on Bogtrotters site and click the "route" button on the photos , that way you can see some of the riding too .

Personally I like to stay in Hawkshead (lots of pubs ) or Ambleside , then you can ride straight from your door.

Have fun , and take lots of innertubes its proper Gnar in places.

Not sure on where to stay as yet, but preferably as you suggested, somewhere that could be used as a base to start from. Saying that got no objection to staying in two different places, but would definitely have to be camping.

Maybe 1 or 2 days a Ambleside and 1 in, or near Glennriding.

Stayed there before and its great VFM , very helpfull too , Ive never been in a hostel before but we just booked a room to ourselves (6) and then shared the showers kitchen etc , a great winter alternative to a tent.
