Had my Mk3 MR2 spin a big end bearing at a trackday on Friday, still not decided on how to proceed, either a complete Toyota supplied short block with all the supposed fixes, or a 2ZZ engine swap. Whichever I go for I want to try and make it a bit safer. The sumps I understand are the same for either engine so I wondered what was regarded as the best option in Elise circles?

I'm somewhat biased on this, but having tried to fit a Moroso one and being well un-impressed (the bolt holes don't even line up properly!), went off and came up with the EP one.

ignoring the better design, it actually fit's and the build quality/finish is in a different league.

Thanks for the input, beginning to sway to having a 2ZZ fitted as deducting the cost of a repair to standard using a new 1ZZ short block the additional 2ZZ cost is likely to just about be covered at resale. I read the 2ZZ has a better sump as standard than the 1ZZ, but people have still seen problems.

not seen a 1ZZ sump in detail, but struggle to see how it can be worse than the 2ZZ's.

I read maybe incorretly that the 1ZZ has no baffling at all, the 2ZZ has an attempt..

Has there been many 1ZZ or 2ZZ failures in Elise due to oil starvation?

Had a moroso ... didn't fit without pursuasion .. had to move oil pickup pipe ... ended up fitting 3 times due to leaks ..
When it stopped leaking the thread on the sump plug was knackered after 3 uses ... so I sent it back !

I've used the pan for six years, I did install a AN-10 drain with AN cap to eliminate any over torque issues when changing oil.
No leakage if you let the block/pan sealing cure over night before adding oil.

So a mixed bag, guys in the MR2 forum seem happy with the moroso but then they probably thought it the only choice as unlikely to be looking at Elise shops. I have always been happy with the EP stuff I've had for the old VX220. Not a lot of price difference between the two to help in a decision. Do both allow for the standard dip stick to give good true readings as both can take more oil? Do they both read full with the extra amounts?

Ordered the EP sump, going to Rogue Motorsport for fitting so hopefully they'll receive it and say how much better than the Moroso it is smile. Or at least it's just as good, along as they don't like the look of the Moroso more I'll be happy biggrin
