Best paint for front grilles

Guys,
Whats the best paint for touching up front grilles,
Would prefer to apply with a brush rather than having to tape up , cover everything and spray.

A can of Hammerite Black Smooth and a small brush. Spray it into the top cover of the can and brush on.

Why would you get spraypaint and brush it on rather than just buying a tin of paint? Are they different?

Spay paint is thinner and hence easier to paint on as it doesn't 'gloop' between the spaces in the grid.

Ah interesting. I shall bear that in mind next time I purchase said paint.

Or you could just mask off around the grills, making sure the whole clam is covered so no overspray can get on the paintwork... and then use a matt black aerosol spray can.

Always found that it takes about 5 mins to redo them with Hammerite so never though it would be worth it to mask off.

I always spray mine and simply mask with a sheet of paper as I go... Satin black seems to look best imho

I've just had a go with this and the paint struggles to adhere to the parts where the original finish has been chipped away, any tricks to it?

sand it down before you start. Not much, but enough to key the surface. then apply multiple coats of paint, letting each dry.

how can you sand the surfaces of a bit of mesh?

its just to key the surface slightly, so just rubbing some sandpaper over it will be better than not doing anything!

Did you shake the can for a good 3 minutes, really hard? If you don't you mainly get propellant it seems which makes it too thin.

It should be reasonably "gloopy". I generally also use a cu-tip cotton bud to paint on - but no real idea if that makes a difference.

Was probably a bit lazy there thinking the spray performance wouldn't matter. Will have another go.

Did mine a couple of weeks ago, just used satin black hamerite in a tin (not spray can) with a brush (you must be careful as the brush flicks as it goes across the mesh and can flick paint onto body work.

Mine covered chips with no prob at all. infact one of my front meshes had a bird go through it and loads of paint had come off. I just folded it all back square and painted it. Job done (until I can be bothered to replace the mesh).

Twas the reason I changed to the can stuff - it splatters less it seems, but you do need to shake it and allow it to go a bit 'gloopy'
