Hello all

I'm about to change my worn out stock shocks for Koni sports, the yellow ones, originally available with the M030 sports chassis option (which my car isn't fitted with ).
I was wondering if I could authorise myself to keep the stock springs and anti-roll bars. Don't you think stiffer shocks may accelerate badly the wearing out of other suspension items?

In fact, stop wasting cash on that water-cooled rubbish. Pop across the border to Germany and get yourself a nice 3.2 Carrera for similar money.

C'mon Thom, it's only a matter of time...

Hey Dom, let me tell you when I can afford a 911 I will buy a TVR!!!! (I have already said that by the way). There is no way you ever see my a** in a beetle mk6

dmsims: check profile
(what about the spoiler thing then? Are you sure you're right? I have checked here and there and believe me the spoiler should be a 968 one! )

LOL

Fair enough then, Thom... just don't forget us on the Porsche forum when you cast yourself into the world of rusty front wishbones ;-)

Nope, I won't forget the mentally retarded but powerful customers who prevent Porsche from building decent, well-balanced, logically engineered front engined cars!

I think dmsims is your best bet on the shocks front - he seems to know his onions.

My 944 turbo came with the konis or bilsteins or whatever the M030 option came with, but I'm not sure what the mix of shocks and springs would do. IMHO you can often swap the rates a little, but you should really get someone to set it up properly and change springs and shocks (even bushes and anti roll bars) together. Then check the geometry..

Slightly stiffer dampers would probably make little difference, shouldn't cause excessive increase in wear to existing components. Lowered and stiffened springs would be more hazardous on this front, perhaps.

Thom knows his onions alright, just not his shocks.

Presumably due to cycling around with a string of them round his neck, not that I'm stereotyping or anything.

Certainly not the same performance as a 944S2; when driving to Le Mans last thursday believe it or not but a friend was struggling to keep up with his 1988 3.2 (even equipped with some sports exhaust!)
They may be the same money but for the value let me laugh; a complete dinosaur compared to any late 944.

Thank you for your opinion Dom; I was told the car should handle well new shocks alone if not driven too hard...

Your car almost certianly came with non adjustable Boge shocks (black or grey in colur) unles it had one of two options: M474 Koni sports (non adjustable) and M030 Koni adjustable
The M030 is as hard on full soft as the M474 on full stiff (if that makes sense)
Spring rates did not vary that much so you should be OK

Yes Dmsims, that is quite what my mates told me; thank you for reassuring me
My current shocks are the standard black Boge indeed.

Thom, I replaced my "standard" front shocks on my S2 with the adustable yellow Koni's - not easy to source, according to Koni UK the last they had, (this was three years ago) - not sure whether that was true, whether they really were discontinued, or whether they have since started remaking them ......

The M030 option might be worth trying to salvage from a scrapyard if you are lucky....remember koni will rebuild almost any koni shock for you....

As for the performance comparison.... I might be slightly biased here having an 87 3.2 now...... both are great fun but the 3.2 has the edge 4500 - 6000 is just heaven

Thanks for the info Christian; I was told the Konis are still available down here (as you say maybe they remake them...?)
Good idea about looking for a scrapyard, could be funny too find one there, and why not many other useful items as well.

I am glad you are happy with the 3.2, I hope it doesn't rain too much
