Marrakech, Morocco, Hotel advice please?
Discussion
Morning all,
Sitting with the Mrs last night we decided it is time to think about a holiday again. We have both expressed and interest in going to Marrakesh. So what I am asking for is advice on some hotels in the city. We are looking at either 4 or 5* for about 10 days.
We have had a look at the Sofitels that are there and they look great if a little on the expensive side.
Any recommendations?

Stay in a traditional Riad in the Medina. There are some fabulous "boutique" places to be found (I think hipmarrakech.com may have a listing) that have their own pool, hammam, etc.
Stay on the south end of the Medina, near the Jamaa el Fna (main square) if you like life clean and tidy and don't want to encounter the less fortunate locals.

+1 on this. Part of the appeal of going to Morocco is actually to experience Medina life.Stay on the south end of the Medina, near the Jamaa el Fna (main square) if you like life clean and tidy and don't want to encounter the less fortunate locals.
We stayed here: http://www.riadzinoun.com/index_eng.html
Not particularly luxurious but a very nice family run place.
I can recommend here: http://www.amanresorts.com/amanjena/home.aspx was there earlier on this year.

as the poster says above, stay close to the main square(we weren't) although our accom was really nice, very basic but cool and unique, not like a bland chain. Running the guantlet with the locals every night got dull pretty quickly, kinda took the shine off it a bit.
you'll get a bit bored after 10 days of using the dip pool and sitting around reading books. Book a 2 day trip to Essauira(sp) very easy to sort out when you're there.
without wishing to sound cliched the sights and sounds were really amazing.

Definitely go for a Riad in the Medina - ours http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g293734-... had staff to walk you to other areas if you are a little trepidatious. Fantastic place best experienced as close to the locals as possible.
Went last summer, great place and good value. Stayed Marrakech for 3 nights, then took the train to Casablanca (VERY clean and cheap) and stayed there 2 nights then back to Marrakech for the last 2. We stayed in a cheap but very clean riad but if budget isn't an option I'd suggest www.marrabahia.com or even http://www.mamounia.com/uk/index.php.
The latter is simply amazing, we went to spend some time in the bar there and it was beautiful. Nightlife in the new town is good too- much more easy going and western. Taxis are cheap but we did haggle.
10 days in Marrakech you may well run out of things to do. You can see all the sights in 1 or 2 days easily. We took a tour to some waterfalls an hours drive away and it was brilliant- lots of steep walking and some light climbing though. (I stupidly went in flip flops but it made for some good laughs)
Tours are good value and people at your accommodation will be happy to help you organise them through a local contact of some sort.
Very jealous if you do stay at the Mamounia- a dream of mine...maybe one day.
