..I need to decide by tomorrow morning what second car I'm going to get, so all advice appreciated (wife currently has a Mk IV Golf).

Choices are :

Audi S8 (1 yr old, 8k miles, £38k).
Porsche 996 C4 tiptronic (3 yrs old, 48k miles, £46k)
(New) BMW M3 SMG (ex-demo, 2k miles, £42k)

Let me know what YOU would buy as a second car (no TVR's!). Thanks

I have only driven *variants* of the cars you are looking at, but I'd take the 996.

Audi S8 is a fine car but for that sort of money, I'd be looking for something that turned heads and the Audi, for all its hidden charms, can appear a bit non-descript (IMHO)

The M3 is an excellent car in all respects BUT at the end of the day, it is an uprated (albeit brilliantly done) version of a basic 3 series Beemer. And most of the population will think you're a Nazi...

Whereas the Porsche looks like a true sportscar with an obvious pedigree. Obviously compromised in terms of its passenger/luggage space but if this isn't an issue, it will leave a smile on your face every single time you drive it.

What a choice, you lucky !

I'd go with CeeGee's advice,

The Audi(IMO)will depreciate quicker.

The BMW needs to be 'M'spec to be quick enough to get out of the junctions that people wont let you out of due to the image.

The 996 would be the one for me out of the choices you've given.

Cheers,

Dave.

I think the S8 looks fabulous. Have you seen Ronin, incidentally?

Superb film! Definate petrol head film. The S8 is brilliant, but the chase with M5 and 406 is amazing!

Gavin

P.S. Go with the Porsche.

I wouldnt go for the S8 I am afraid - the depreachiation (sp?) on those is horendous in the first few years. A better bet for that type of money would be the BMW, while the best the Porker.

An S8 makes great sense if you are looking at 4 years old as they are almost giving them away. But the Porker and BMW will be worth about double the S8.... Cracking car, but lets face it - a lot of money to waste.

Personally the 996 would be my choice - never really liked the image of BMW's.

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks for all the responses guys - I think I'll get the 996 and start saving for an Aston Martin Vanquish!

Or maybe in a couple of years Audi will bring out a REAL driver's car that is NOT based on the bulbous A6.

Do you really have two Ferraris? Nice job if you do, but surely the choice of which one to take is hard?

Hi Paul,
The short answers are, yes, and not really.

Damn lucky to be able to do it, and thank my lucky stars every day. Just shows you that willingness to take risks combined with bloody minded determination can pay off in the end.

The 456 is a four seater and I use it when the whole family want to go somewhere in style, or want to go out with my mates. Use the Modena when two seats is all that's needed and want to go out for a blast. Like tonight.... See ya
