Due to a stuck rear brake caliper the rear disc on the o/s of wife's 2000 (V reg) A4 1.9Tdi has become badly corroded.

I've removed discs (the type with the bearing races pressed into the disc assembly ) and obtained new. The garage that I use for more difficult jobs advised me not to use the original ABS rings as they are only an interference fit on the disc and will almost certainly be loose on the new disc and cause the ABS to malfunction.

I rang GSF and ordered the discs and pads plus the ABS rings and even sent wifey along with an original disc to ensure we got the right ones.

The old ABS rings are thin pressed metal with holes punched in wheras the replacements supplied appear to be cast toothed rings.

I'm guessing that the ABS works on a proximity detection of the metal but can anyone confirm please that the toothed ring is an aceptabel replacement for the punched hole version.

I'd rather not have to strip it and do the job twice.

Thanks in advance

My 96 A4 has the toothed type though I don't know if they are an oem part or after market.I did however swap them from old to new discs without problem. Were still a tight fit on the new discs and the abs works fine.
It's worthwhile checking the adjustment of the wheel bearings after a week or two of driving as mine developed a bit of play once bedded in.

Thanks Revol.

It appears as though they are a direct replacement and I have fitted the new rings but have yet to tests them.

I will check the bearing for play though.

Just can't get one of the pistons to wind back fully using pliers so have purchased a wind back tool and will have another go tomorrow.

Reviving this old thread, since I'm in the same situation. Can I just swap the abs rings from the one with holes to the toothed ring?

Yes you can.

Put the new hubs in the freezer overnight and when you're ready to do the job heat the rings on the gas hob and they'll just drop on.

Make sure you put them on right way round so the toothed side faces the sensor.

Good luck and be quick putting the rings on if using the heat and freeze method as the rings will grip as soon as they touch the cold hub.

Let us know how you get on.

Unfortunately it didn't go so well frown. I don't know it didn't go in fully I think I made sure it was tight but I think the old ones were sitting further in. The ABS light did go away for some time but came soon after 😭😭😭. I'm considering buying the disc with the rings pressed on instead, also I did notice that the abs sensor which I replaced last week had a bit of a scuff on it, could it be that the previous ring damaged it?

Sorry to hear that but you should have been able to drift them on if they got stuck part way.

I'm no expert but I wouldn't have thought surface damage on the sensor would be an issue.
