Chaps

I have looked at some locost websites and feel that I have a reasonable idea of what it will cost to build a locost racer and I am very serious about getting into this, but how much does each race cost to enter ?? or do you pay for a season ?

Do you have to take part in all the races across the season and can more than one driver use the same car for different events ?? My wife is interested in having a go :eek, so looks even more likly that she will let me spend some cash

Any advice for a beginner would be great.

Ask Stig (look up his profile). He races a locost. Car no. 13 IIRC. I think there are other locost racers on here too.

I take it you've been watching 5th Gear then!

Costs can break down as follows (v.roughly) based on 10 races.

Car: Build or buy (front runner for sale at the mo. for 4.5k)
Trailer: 500
ARDS licence: 150
750MC joining fees: 40
Championship registration: 25
Overalls etc.: 500
Race entries: 150ish a race - 1500
Tow Fuel: 100ish a race depending on tow vehicle - 1000
Race Fuel: 30ish quid a race - 300
Maintenance/repairs: Who knows? Maybe 1000

Total: £9515

So a whole season for under 10k

You can race with multiple drivers in the same car at different meetings although you will have to register each competitor. Incidently, the girl being interviewed by VBH is my other half! My brother has also just finished his car so we're now running 3 Locosts

Feel free to have a look at the site or contact me directly for more details.

Do you have to build the chassis yourself, or can you buy ready made?. If you build it yourself is the top roll cage an off the shelf item or do you build that yourself?

A couple of stupid questions probably, but i am curious as I was discussing this with a mate, as we both like the idea of relatively cheap racing - so we thought we might have a crack at a car between us.

Cheers

Nowadays you can buy almost an entire car, actually - make that you CAN buy all the parts for an entire car and just put it together.

The major suppliers are Stuart Taylor, Martin Keenhan, Lolocost (Robin Hood) and Procomp.

There's still quite a bit of work involved though but it all comes down to time and money!

Another company to try is Triton Sportscars www.tritonsportscars.co.uk. They build great competition chassis, with an MSA approved rollcage fitted as standard and a fantastic standard of welding. Contact is Mark Bean.

One thing to be aware of, you can suffer a lot of damage in the championship, due to the range of driving abilities. So a strong chassis and cage is essential.
