OH NOES TALL PEOPLES ARE ALL GOING TO DEI

Completely wk Article said:
For every four inches (10cm) above five feet a person was, the researchers said they had a 16% increased cancer risk.
Microsoft Excel said:
Height range Cancers per 1000 women per year Absolute risk per year Delta
Short (under 5ft) 7.5 0.75% 0.00%
Average (5ft 3in) 8.3 0.83% 0.08%
Tallest (over 5ft 9in) 10 1.00% 0.25%
So, what you actually meant to write was that "if you're dead tall, there might be an additional risk of one quarter of one percent per year, which I can phrase in scary relative terms as 16% per 4 inches".

I fking hate tabloid science journalism.

But only a little bit more doomed than they might otherwise have been.

Erm. When it increases to 10 in 100 from 7.5 in 100 that is in fact a 33% increase in risk. Sorry to burst your maths bubble there Cdr.

That's the relative risk increase, and it doesn't tell you anything about the actual risk.

It's all a load of old codst.

Smoking stunts your growth apparently - but it would appear that stunting your growth also protects you from cancer.

Also where on earth have they got these women from?
I wouldn't class a short woman as being under 5ft tall - if they are less than 5ft tall they are a midget.

5ft 3" is "Average" - is it hell.

And if they mentioned the absolute risk increase instead then some whining gimp on another forum would whinge about not knowing the relative increase... wink

Even allowing for shrinkage there arent many tall old folk. I'm 6ft6 and if I make it to 70 I'd be surprised to have dropped under 6ft.....yet where are all the 6ft old men?

I need to shrink or I'm in trouble.

T

ps - all we need now is to hear that being powerfully built is bad for you and I'm done for.

I'm 6ft8" and am prepared to live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse.

In all seriousness, there's lots of life shortening negatives about being very tall. None of which I care about as when you go that's it.

Cynical me (I've become that way with age!). More money needed for more research...

'We don't know why...'
'There is a possibility...'
'No need to get alarmed...'

'We just need to do more research'. ie more donations please.

It's an old hat (TALL) story that began ages ago (2003) in the USA at Harvard Uni (research!)
tall men at risk of Prostate Cancer. Story now enlarged... more research needed.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2784737.stm

Prostate Cancer is of course a worry for (older) men as it's the UK's biggest killer. So more research needed.
As someone who has experienced prostate trouble (I'm 6ft1 yikes ) I found something interesting by one person and he didn't get any research money!

He just thought about the problem and came up with what is probably a very logical conclusion.

Why is it older men get it?
The bladder sits right on top of the Prostate (a sex gland as we all know), the weight of the bladder, from not being emptied often enough, presses down on the prostate... and when it has done this all those years, and you reach an age where your hair goes grey or disappears!, it's not surprising the ol' prostate enlarges a little, sometimes a lot (very common in wrinklies).
So there you have it, all you younger ones, go and have that pee -don't wait for nature to call- do it now!
Surprisingly, you'll find you will 'go'!

Yes, but then you'll get a bad back. Best wear very flat shoes, or have your legs amputated below the knee. We're possible stand/walk in holes or trenches. Avoid ladders and stilletto heels.

Ok I might not die young as I am getting old-ish. Although I've a way to go & catch up with your grey experienced looks.

No woosh required.
