OK everyone I'm now going to confess. My Boxster has been off the road for a week now and it doesn't look like getting any better anytime soon.

PSM/ABS system packed up on Bank Holiday Monday. Got it recovered to *** (A Porsche dealer) on Tuesday morning. It is now Tuesday morning one week later and it still isn't fixed.

Yesterday I actually start getting calls from them so at least now they've started looking at it! (Jeez)

Anyway. The upshot is they found a nail in one tyre and (rightly) claim that all tyres are experiencing uneven wear. (True). Prior to the ABS computer debacle I was going to take it down to Micheldever and have all four wheels balanced, the tracking adjusted using their computer and a full set of new tyres.

*** so far have quoted me £150 to do the tracking set up - they will get back to me about the tyres because I told 'em since they had had the car for a week they could match Micheldever's price or I wouldn't be letting them do it.

So. Apart from my tale of woe about the ABS (call a week off the road "service" eh?) here is my dilemma.

Should I let *** do the tracking/alignment/balancing setup because they have better, specialist Porsche equipment or should I pay one third the price for it at Micheldever when they change the tyres.

Opinions please. (Sympathy welcome but not required).

Oh and the Mrs has been p***ing herself telling me why didn't I buy a proper British made RELIABLE car like her Chimaera. (You can just guess, can't you....)

Excellent stuff... sorry I mean er... bugger. Get the tracking done at the tyre place if they are a third of the price. If you want it done at the Porsche place start off being nice to them. If that doesn't work turn into a b@stard If that doesn't work give up and take it to the cheap place.

PS Make sure you've got your car back before you become a b@stard.

Actually it just got worse. The Mrs Chimaera just overheated on her way to work. RAC currently rushing to her rescue. F***. F***. F***.

So, as mentioned in a similar thread, where's the third disaster....

Wouldn't like to specluate on the third disaster, Don. Did you switch the cooker off this morning ? Did you leave the washing machine running ?

I've passed some advice onto Don, y'all. My opinion is to let *** do what they're good at (i.e. fix the ABS problem) and allow Micheldever to do the car setup.

That's assuming (of course) that they've set a Boxster up in the past - wouldn't like someone using my car as a test bed. Oh, and stick-on weights please !

Keep us posted Don - sorry to hear of your misfortune....

Talk to Domster before getting your tracking/balancing done at Micheldever mate, he'll give you some strong words of warning...... I seem to rermember weights falling off before the wheels got back on the car etc etc....

Don't go to Micheldever for anything other than mail order tyres. They ****ed up my wheel balancing ('machine out of calibration that day, oops, sorry') and then they ****ed up my tracking (found later to be 6mm toe out when it should be 0-1mm toe in). And yes, that was in their super duper laser alignment bay, which happened to be operated by some quite busy and possibly careless people.

When you think this was on a 187mph Lotus Carlton, I think you can see that their attitude could do with some improvement.

I now go to Headley Tyres, and would get alignment done by someone who really knew their stuff, say a Porsche garage or JZ Machtech.

Hope this helps, and sorry to hear about your problems!

Thanks for your advice guys. Even if it conflicts a bit! All useful.

I'm letting *** fix the ABS computer - under warranty, of course.

I have booked into Micheldever for a full setup. But its a MONTH away! (They have done Porsches before, Greg)

I'm now tempted to call *** and get 'em to do the setup - but then buy my tyres from M as usual and then cancel the setup I've booked with them.

Ohhh. It'll all be alright in the end. I'm sure. B**** H***

Just think happy thought's. It'll all be worth it in the end. At least it'll be a one off (you'd hope) and not a regular occurance.

Micheldever is like a car cattle market - you all line up and they get you in and out as quick as possible. Really not the type of service I want on my Porker - would happily pay the extra to have something a bit more up-market.

Don,
Have used Micheldever Tyres loads of times in the past have had no problems with wheel balanceing but have had a similar prob withwheel alignment on a Citroen we used to own years ago.So would't suggest you get your alignment de there.

Steve

Well Guys. *** have come through. Their quote for the a full set of new boots is £30 quid more than M's. At £30 then I'm going to let 'em do it (and the setup) as I will get the car back FIXED UP COMPLETELY.. I have calculated the extra cost over M as £105...but they will do it right now and not in a month's time.

The wife's Chim is now on a low-loader heading for H in Farnham.

I get the joy of collecting her in my Porsche supplied Toyota Avensis!

I am currently trying to think those happy thoughts....

M'dever can't even get balance or tracking right on my 106, so I wouldn't take a Porsche down there (or my TVR).

Like someone's already said - great for supplying tyres, but go somewhere else for the rest.

Surely it's worth the little extra to keep the main dealer full history. They must be the best place to go for anything technical. Personally I'd feel it's money well spent.

Got my Boxster back last night at 7:30pm. In the end I got all the setup work and new tyres at *** since they had the car for TWO WHOLE WEEKS! F******g H***.

Still. Took it on a High Performance course around Goodwood circuit this morning.

I forgive it completely. Enough said.

Great news mate - nice one. What boots did they put on it in the end, if you don't mind me asking ? I'm sure the day yesterday was to scrub them in, right ?

Actually, took the S out last night for a blast and a petrol stop at the local Shell for some Optimax. I'm naturally cynical about anything that makes claims to do certain things, but tell you what, the car runs a lot sweeter on it, and has a bit more bang as well. Mrs Greg asked me specially to go and get some - how could I refuse ? Top down on the way home, birds singing, fresh manure in the fields around our way - I'll miss it next week.

whatever

Well, you're supposed to go easy on the tyres for the first 500miles. That lasted about one lap.

Pirelli PZero Asimetrico. Four of 'em. The grip is just wonderful but ...ouch, my wallet!

Thom: I paid out about £950 for four new tyres and a full Geometry/Balance etc. Car feels lovely on it too.

Chim's back on the road again thanks, Keith. Had a nsty shock though. The Mrs (who is responsible for the Tiv's servicing) had let it go 1200 miles over on the last service and the last 9 months of our three year warranty has gone for a Burton. Bugger. We found out when we had to pay £500 for a new water pump, gasket and fitting etc etc. Ah well. A learning experience.

Worst of it is that its booked in for a service next month as well: I suspect they'll find a load of stuff that needs doing. The car is beginning to get a bit expensive so it could be up for replacement....

Hi

Pleased to hear your car is back.

Ive had no end of problems with car setup (M5 and Caterhams 7s) and would certainly only take it to a dealer with the right equipment or specialist via recomendations). Tyres and setup are no compromise areas of safety.

safe driving.
