I would be interested to know where your favourite Midlands roads are? I am fed up with the traffic/speed bumps / ****e road surfaces around here and need a new playground. Ideal road would be quiet, good visibility, open bends, good surface. Ideas welcome. Race tracks don't count. NB. A fantastic road is the one between Macclesfield and Buxton, have any of you chaps had a go there? What I am looking for is one like that, but closer to Brum!

This ain't gonna be much use .. I found a wicked road a couple of weeks ago when I went over to TMS. I was in my A8, but just as soon as I get 4 wheels back on the Chim I'm going to find it again, it was fun. All up and down, sharp turns, humpty backs, dips, you name it. Trouble is I got lost, so I don't really know where the hell I was!

Favourite roads, always a good topic... Both the A422 and A423 have there good stretches, the B4077 is a stunning road (near M5 J9 to Stow on the Wold; good mix of bends and staightish bits can have a lot of fun at sane speeds, but some unexpected and unexpectedly tight bends can wake you up... Nearer Brum A442 (Kidderminster to Bridgenorth then Telford) is good but traffic can be terrible... Also plenty of Good B roads to East of Brum...

A6003 from Kettering to Oakham, A606 from Oakham to Melton Mowbray. Then the Asomethingorother to Uppingham, and from there to Donnington. That'll be my route next weekend then... :-D It was fun playing with the bikes on the way back from the British Superbikes at the start of the month...

North East Leicestershire and Rutland have got some fantastic roads - Marshy was right about the roads from Kettering to Melton, but they can get quite busy. Take any of the B-roads that break off on the way, and you won't be disappointed. Jim

Not bad territory, know many of the roads in that area too, traffic only really bad near Nottingham and Leicester (and smaller towns in area)... Also a few nice Roads near Donnington, some very nice B roads around the area... Some interesting routes from that area to Mallory too.

My vote goes to the A339 in Hampshire between Basingstoke and Newbury..then after crossing the Newbury bypass the Newbury/Hungerford road. Lots of overtaking opportunities! Not so good when the traffic is bad, though , but that isn't too often

I know it is a long way but the best roads I've ever been on are around Aviemore/Cairngorms/Inverness, you can see for miles ahead, looonng swoopy curves or twisty undulating stuff. Worth a visit for the scenery alone and I know an excellent little hotel with the best food around

Alternatively get yourself back up to the Peak District and one the Snake Pass (A57). Maybe a bit narrow for TVR's ....... :-)
I once came down Snake Pass, toying with one of the warmer Fiat Puntos on the way down. He had agility on his side, I had grunt. Funny thing was, I wasn't in the TVR, rather, a BMW 730i. It acquitted itself quite well I feel. Mind you, the transmission threw a wobbly by the time I got to the town at the bottom, and I had to reboot... ah, turn the engine off and back on to fix it.

A68 to edinburgh or A82 from Glasgow to Ft William, missing out the bridges and going around the heads of the lochs as they have to maintain the roads around the lochs to trunk standard in case of bridge problems, but they go nowhere and have no traffic on them. ))) Edited by kate on Wednesday 25th April 12:04

Add a few inches ground clearance before trying Eire roads at speed ! Macclesfield to Buxton (Cat & Fiddle) is a great road, and if you like that carry on down Long Hill to Whaley Bridge, and then back to Macclefield on Macclesfield Road and start another lap. Or for variety, go up the Goyt Valley, which is mostly one way in the summer, and if you go late on a summers evening you won't hit too many walkers either! sjm

Couldn't agree more Mungo. In fact any part of the A272 is brilliant, I once had the good fortune to be able to do most of it in 1 day before. Mind you this was pre-TVR days so now it will be even better! Watch out for the humped back bridge just the Gatwick side of Billingshurst though, I took a Vectra SRi that way and completley forgot about it, felt like I was 20 feet in the air and the passengers freshly opened tin of cider ended up out side of the can Edited by .Mark on Thursday 26th April 14:33

Eire Roads, the majority used to be fairly awful but that has changed with regard surfaces etc so you can be quite pleasently surprised followed by being quickly unsurprised a mile or so further on. It's not so much the roads as the Dickheads on them e.g. I was once approached by a Girl at a set of traffic lights at the end of a dual carriage way who asked me "Was that you flashing me a mile back? Yes, Why? You were driving in the outside lane doing 40mph with nobody on the inside lane". The answer I got was "sure, it's a big road and I can drive where I want". I kid you not. Other things to bear in mind, the cops like sitting on the end of a fast straight especially if it's after a couple of miles of twisty roads, nothing unusual there. They come out in force at weekends and a weekend at the end of a month when the stats need to be brought up to scratch (short of dosh) forget it. The good news is that there is no points system here yet(there is in N.I.) and you get slapped with a 50 quid fine if your 'caught' being naughty. With a UK plate the chances of the Cop not sending you the fine increase, it all depends on how much you get up their noses, rule of thumb, be nice to 'em. Have fun.
