I know its a really daft question, but imagine the fun of seeing all the movement of traffic/aircraft etc.
So is there a law against it? For example, do I need a transmitting licence?
OR is it just a total nono?

No idea about the legality of radar on your roof, but if its just to track the aircraft, there are easier ways...

Thanks for the links, I will be mesmerised for hours now smile

I know you can also buy a virtual plotting receiver thingy that plugs into your laptop, but I thought it would be fun to watch everything else as well like Cars, boats, trains(!) etc.

I would imagine at the least it's an issue of power and frequency of transmission.

Mmmmm. Good point. What do they transmit on? I thought about 1Ghz? I have been looking on Google for RADAR and all I get back are the car speed camera things. Again wattage, not sure either.

Added: I have just found this informative website: http://www.radartutorial.eu/index.en.html. I looks like wattage and frequency are all over the place.

Is flightradar24 realtime or delayed ?
I saw a realtime radar map on an iPad recently
that was owned by someone working for german air traffic control.
He had an interesting app, he could "zoom in" on any plane within 10 miles,
go outside and point the iPad roughly in the direction of the plane,
which was then displayed live on the screen, not unlike a gun sight, with location, distance, height and direction.
I told the guy "that´s what the talibs are dreaming of" and he replied :
"That´s why its not for public use".

You would require a transmitter licence - which you wouldn't get.

Flight 24 is pretty much realtime. I spent one Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago tracking stuff on the way into Heathrow as it flew past my upstairs window. What I was seeing out the window matched exactly with what the computer was showing.

The above link is secondary Surveillance radar it is an interrogation of the aircraft transponder mainly airliners so not really radar.

You will not see primary radar returns so a lot of aircraft will not be shown.

Yes and no. Only Mode S SSR returns are shown on these sights, but SSR uses both primary and secondary radar; primary for range and bearing - 'traditiona;' radar, and secondary purely to affix data to the primary return.

Had a Decca 101 in the front room for a few years back in the early '70s but then again I worked for Decca as a trainee radar technician smile
never picked up aircraft with it due to location and the fact that it was surface scan.
One thing we did have was a lead lined apron to wear when we were working on the radar incase we got fried nuts eek

Can a marine type radar not be installed on your roof and work just the same?

Hope you aren't near any military air corridors, OP.
an unknown t'internet source said:
Police in Britain using a radar gun noted a reading of more
than 300 mph, just before their equipment fried.

Seconds later a low-flying Harrier jet hurtled past.

The police complained to the Royal Air Force about the
damage to their equipment, but the police were told to
consider themselves lucky.

The Harrier's target-seeker had locked onto the radar and
triggered an automatic retaliatory air-to-surface attack.

Fortunately for the police, the Harrier was not armed with
missiles.

Thats what I was thinking of. But can a marine RADAR be used on land legally?
As for a Decca, thats what my friend has although at the moment I dont know what model it is.

Unless you have an amazingly tall house, the only ground traffic you will see will be vehicles going down your own road.

To answer the original question, it is pretty close to real time. Lag seems to be <15 seconds or so for most of the time. Not quite sure how it would help terrorists, as it would have to be in visual range anyway for what ever A-Team type SAMs terrorists are supposed to use.

Back in the 70s I was a radar apprentice at Cosford. I was supposed to disconnect the weather radar dish in the nose cone of a Beverly and connect a dummy load before switching on to test it. I forgot, and beamed radar energy directly into the crew room in the hangar, instantly frying their TV, and possibly their crown jewels too.
