What bird is this?

Sorry, I don't have a picture as it's chucking it down out there BUT there is a little bird, looks like a sparrow, but he's got an orange body with a dark back and head. HE can also hover for a few seconds to get at plants.

Any ideas?

Looks like it was a Chaffinch - pretty little fellow.

ETA - Nope, looks like you were quite right, Bullfinch picture in one of my old books looks like the winner!!
