Working as a permie now but pondering on going contract. What do you think? Been contract before so I know the deal.

Depends. Are you better at your job than you are at asking coherant questions?

If not, stay permie

Of course, actually am I, I don't know.

What I am asking is, is there a lot more contract work around these days than there was 12 months ago.

If you've done it before you know the score.

Ask yourself

Do you have enough money put away if it goes tits up you won't lose your house

What is your attitude to risk?

I've done it for 7 years and never had a day out of work I didn't choose. Until recently when I resigned from one contract to move to another and it fell through.

Luckily I put money away so I've decided to take the opportunity of a few months off whilst it's sunny

It's all about your attitude to risk and financial status

I've not noticed any significant difference... there are usually well paid roles around for the right candidates, and equally there are lower paid and even underpaid roles available. Always has been the case... those more desperate will take the low/underpaid roles rather than risk waiting for something else.

I'm a contractor looking at going permie if you want something else adding to the mix. Currently on mediocre contract pay and struggling to find another job which even matches this rate.

Why not tout your CV in response to a few contract ads and if the feedback is strong enough then bite the bullet?

Personally I'm sick of all the paperwork and never going on holiday for more than a week because I can't afford time off, but that's as much a budgeting fail on our part as anything else.

You talking about desktop/server support roles?

Well at least that explains the lack of communication skills wink
