I used to do quite a bit of racing and time trials years ago. It used to be blood and thunder....I then got a job and settled down and it all fell away.... ! I was sick of hearing the brother in law (who is a triathelete) giving me old chat about how fast he went here and what he had done....!

So I got my bike out of the attic and it wasnt too bad a shape. Its an F.Moser from 1986 with Columbus Junior tubing and full 600 Shimano group and Cinelli Criterium bars on...! I done a few rides and didnt feel too bad.. The old racing head was still there...

My brother in law suggested a spin out ... ! He said maybe 22 miles so that "It wont be too sore on you ha ha" I went out with him and I was doing my usual lifting the pace over short uphills and generally keeping the work rate up.

His computer was beeping and stuff telling him he was pushing too hard. I never had a computer nor do I intend to get one. I knew by the rock in his shoulders and head down that he was starting to suffer.... I went out the front on the wide roads and drove like a mad man .. The BIL could not take the pace and was dropped .. In the last 3 miles I waited up and he was totally blown up ! His carbon fibre TREK with them tri-bars on was no good to him . Nor his owl fancy chat about VO2 and HRM !

We landed back to his house and he could hardly get off his bike. His wife gave out to me for leaving him in such a state

I told him that a triathelete is not a real cyclist and now I was back in the saddle I didnt want to hear any owl s**te about stuff he read on the net !

First competition has been won and that p**ck has been knocked off his perch

As I said you never lose your road craft even after 23 years off - He is fit dont get me wrong but hes no cyclist.... ! I am hooked once again - Its like sommit was missing and I didnt know what it was ... Now I do .. Funny now he dosent want to play on the bikes with me any more

It should be a bit of craic at least... If I finish it I'll be going well !

Wonder if my BIL will do it...!

hahaha! This story has made me seriously question the amount I'm prepared to spend on a new bike! Do the etape Hibernia, I've got friends who did it and said it was great.

Welcome back to cycling thumbup
