Hi Guys,

I eventualy got round to buying my first big bike. The guy down the road has sold me his Yamaha XJ600N its black and very sexy with a wolfrace can.

What I was wondering is if there is anyone out there with one of these that could suggest any tweaks to made to the bike? Things like suspession, stearing dampers and the like.

No cheaky comments about adding it to a skip guys!!! I know what you lot are like

Personally I would not do anything. Enjoy in its current form and when you feel you are ready change to a sports 600 or hornet fazer etc or even something bigger.

I had the S version as my first bike and it was more than enough for me when I started

Arrrhhggggg.... I'm gonny go in sane.....

I cant get my new bike to start. It fires but just wont start. I tried taking the plugs out and giving them a clean and it started but it doesnt run it just cuts out after 5 seconds. I have tried to just leave it ticking over but it just cuts out and I have tried to rev it but it just dies. I have tried with and without choke.

I have put fresh petrol in it. I have heated the plugs.....but nothing seems to work.

If anyone has any ideas could you let me know as its supposed to be going in for an M.O.T tommorrow first thing.

Me and the guy I am buying it from just cant figure out what the problem is....

Any help with this would be great folks I know you all are biker geniuses

Choke???

Don't bother changing anything yet until you get used to the bike that way you will see & feel the benefit of adding the extra's.

I've tried it with the choke on and off and half way but that doesnt work.

I also checked the cut off switch its not that either as when you switch on the cut off nothing works.

I just dont understand it, it was running perfect the other day. Started second press.

The thing that I dont get is that it starts but just doesnt continue to run.

Try checking the battery. Often there is enough current for the spark, but not enough to tunr the engine over. Try bump starting it..

I hate to state the obvious, but is the fuel tap turned off, or set to reserve? Try seeing if it will run with the air filter removed. You may have a filthy filter - it will start OK on the pilot circuits within the carb but won't run properly with a dirty air filter....

Sounds to me like blocked main jets

It will start because there is fuel in the choke jet but if you try to turn the choke off or open the throttle then fuel wont be coming up the main jet and it will stall

Can happen after it been running too as the gunk that blocks the jet gets loosened when the engine is running

IIRC the main jet runs up the middle of the carb, you need to remove the float chambers and give it a good clean (if this is the problem of course)

>> to add, try running a direct fuel line to the carbs before taking them apart it could be the tap of a filter or somesuch, supply the carbs with a clear plastic tub so you can see the fuel moving, DO NOT ride it with a tube like this in place, trez dangerous

I know I don't know anything cos I am a girl but.....

Could be an immobiliser???

I have seen exactly this problem you describe when a bike engine has become immobilised.
In fact spent an hour trying to bump start someone who's bike was doing this. Ran for a few secs then stopped....

Do you have a Datatool or other alarm fitted?

My first look would be to check that the fuel tap is switched on and that the fuel lines etc are not blocked - I once left the tap off on my trail bike and it would run, but as soon as you twisted the throttle, it died. I felt like a proper tit when i realised the problem!

As mentioned, it could be the main jet in the carb, but if it ran perfectly only recently, i wouldnt have thought it would be that?

Diversion type engines are a pig to warm up and the petrol tap needs to be in the prime position when they are running. If the plugs are NGK they don't clean up without sandblasting, put a new set in first, it cures a multitude of problems.

I cant beleave how much of an idiot I am, well so is the previous owner.

The problem is sorted woohoo...

The problem was the stupidest thing you could ever imagine. The bike will not start unless the side stand is up. What the hell is that all about???

Ok I know its a safety feature but come on... Really!!!

IF you put the side stand down on the bike the engine just stops. It will start up sometimes if the stand is down but usually cuts out a few seconds later. Is this supposed to do this?

If it is supposed to do this then thats my idea of buying a remote start alarm out of the window.

Am I just stupid or should this really work like this? and how would this effect a remote start up alarm

There'll be a switch somewhere connected to the side stand. Depending on whether it's on or off with the stand up, either short it or just pull the wires off.

mmmmm Dont know if I am happy about chopping wires on my new bike. Known my luck the beast wont start again.

I suppose I could clip the wire at a spot that I could solder back together again.

I'll try it out. Cheers

No need to chop anything... I'm guessing a bit here because I don't know the precise details of the switch assembly in question, but I'd be very surprised if the wires weren't connected to the switch with some kind of push-on connector.
First step... pull the connector off the switch, if it starts - job done.
If it doesn't start stick a piece of bare wire into the slots in the push-on connector, then shove it back onto the switch so the wire is held in place (make sure it doesn't touch anything other than the two connections in the connector/switch). Should start then.
Or you could mechanically disconnect the switch from the side stand and fix it in the stand-up position.

....or you could just put the stand up before you start it

Are you sure the bike isnt in gear? My Bandit will only start with the clutch held in. It will start fine with the stand down, but if i put the stand down with the bike in gear, it cuts out. Provided its in neutral, it will happily run on the stand.

Suzuki's will only ever start with the clutch pulled in, if the stand is down it will not start at all unless in neutral, but still need clutch in.

well it did on all the Suzukis I have been on, GS500, RF900, Bandit 600, & my GSXR600
