Could use some advice PDQ!

The wife's immaculate Merc 190 was reversed into at speed by a 4x4 leaving it undriveable. No question who's fault it is. (not the wife's!)

I need a similar car (eg: 4 doors and preferably automatic) as the 2 door offered by the repairer is not an option due to carting small kids around (car seats etc etc).

The Car Crash Line are offering a car with the costs to be claimed from the guilty party's insurance - however they are very vague about costs and whether I will have to pay the costs myself in the event of an inter insurance wrangle.

Anyone got any views?

it is always going to be better to get the other party to provide the car and pay for it themesleves, rather that for you to try to get the cash back.

Don't accept what you are being offered as it is not adequate compensation for the damage that their client has done to you. they can always get a more appropriate car (as Avis is only a call away!).

Stick up for your rights.

Get your insurance company to supply the hire car, then there's no comeback (or doesn't that work in the UK?) Here you just call them (the insurance), they send an e-mail to the local car hire company of choice and bingo! a set of wheels similar not smaller, than yours.......

Just my ill informed 2p/worth...

Who are Car Crash Line? Not one of those sharks who persuade you to sign up for hire cars at exorbitant rates and then attempt to claim off the third party I hope? If so be wary, as if the third parties insurers refuse to cough up (ground of unreasonable expense) you'll be stuck with the bill. Poor schmucks have got really stitched up here - it's about as ethical as Claims Direct.

Your insurer should be sympathetic. If they're not, I believe you can hire your own replacement car and attempt a claim for 'uninsured losses' as long as it's justifiable, but you'll have to pay for it up front. This approach doesn't risk your NCB.

Use your insurer to sort this out - thats what you pay them for. Don't accept no for an answer - they might try to fob you off. The cost of hire of the replacement car will be covered by your claim on the third party, even if you have to carry the cost yourself to begin with. Check your policy carefully and don't let the buggers try to force you into a 50/50 settlement. Good luck!

If the car's written off - don't accept the first offer. If your insured for a specified value rather than market rates you should be laughing. Do you have insured loss cover? That should cover all your expenses and excesses as well.

It's getting interesting - the guy now says it's my wifes fault. It's amazing what damage you can do whilst stationery . . . . .

With regards the Car Crash Line I smell a rat in there somewhere so am now onto my insurance company.

Very frustrating - thanks for the pointers!

Make copious notes NOW, write down everything that is said by you and him. It'll be worth it - takes loads of photos too; your car, his car, the road, skid marks, the lot. Documentation like that is worth a small fortune when the insurance companies finally get involved.

Somehow I don't think grant is typing this from the scene of the accident, in which case photos of the 3rd party's car could be difficult to take.
