Hello,

Has any of our intrepid travelers drive over the Fern Passe in Austria?
I am planning a drive from Friedrichshafen, Germany to Innsbruck, Austria, and was planning to drive over Fernpass, Imst District, Tyrol, Austria.

How is it this time of the year.
Is it a pretty route?

Hi,

We did it a couple of years ago, unfortunately it was clogged with traffic. Thus most attention was focused on the bumper to bumper traffic.

We did a year or so later, cross into Austria from Fussen, very scenic and a good road.

The Fernpass is the main route from Tyrol to southern Germany (excluding the Munich / Garmisch Partenkirchen corner). As a result it's always pretty busy this time of year with tourist traffic; and is known for this rather than it's picturesque scenery. Having said that, some of the scenery is pretty nice especially as you get towards the pass itself.

If you're travelling during the daytime on a weekend, my strong recommendation would be to choose another route due to the congestion alone - it'll be much more pleasant, particularly if you're not in a rush. During the week or after about 6pm it's a bit better.

(Speaking from experience of using the Fernpass multiple times per year over the last 10 years)
