I'd say the nearest would be something like the Fiat Panda 100hp, however they are quite a bit newer and more expensive. Can't think of any equivalent Japanese car that is along the same lines.

I've a friend who bought one and for the money they seem like great little cars to have fun in yet still do all the daily slog stuff well.

Yeah im thinking about getting one, somewhere inbetween my old cinquecento and something with a decent amount of poke aswell as have decent economy?

Whats reliability like? I just cant help thinking they look abit too small and jap and abit old biddy'ish.

Im struggling to find something that 'new' and with a 0-60 of the same seconds for 2grand. Could go down the mk4 golf route but they just seem abit stodgy and can imagine things breaking if theyre 10-11years old..

My friend got his rather cheap, 52 plate for £850. It had a short MOT and a few iffy Suzuki stickers plastered over it that he took off. It sailed through its MOT. Don't see any reason why it should be any less reliable than other Jap stuff.

He's used to having pretty quick cars (2.0L Turbo MR2 Mk1 and Fiat Coupe) and he found the go pretty decent and the handling brilliant for the B roads. Coupled with 40+MPG all the time he loves his. The looks are a bit challenging to some, but the JWRC look kind of suits it.

I think they are a bit of a hidden gem and I've been considering selling my daily Yaris for something that is a bit more fun but still practical.

Owned an 04 iggy sport a couple of years ago as a daily driver, 105 bhp, amazing handling, good fuel economy, reliable whilst i had it, the only thing they are prone to as i know of are wheel bearings, mine had receipts for 3 lots in the service history. Seats are genuine factory fit recaros and arw excellent, quite a bit of aftermarket stuff out there as well as owners club and forum, defo worth a punt from a cinquecento.
