Formula 1 is revising its qualifying format as of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 11.

Replacing the existing single car sessions will be a one hour period split into two 20 minute sessions, with combined times from both forming the grid spot.

Each car must complete six laps in each of the timed periods with the fastest time from each aggregated to produce the overall grid time. Both sessions will be run with free fuel levels, meaning a return to flat out qualifying with cars in their optimum specification.

The parc ferme rules will continue but teams will then fuel the cars after qualifying in preparation for the race.

I like the sound of this

The old one hour system was good, but perhaps with the additional rule of having to complete one set of laps in each 20 minute period to avoid the "empty track syndrome" for the first half hour?. The present system is dull beyond belief until the last 5 cars run. Sometimes not even that gives any excitement.
20 minutes to get 20 cars on track, all trying to get 6 laps in, would compromise too many laps with traffic, the biggest complaint about the old system I believe.

I've always said if they have a set number of tyres for the weekend anyway let them out for unlimited laps for an hours qualifying. Some may only ever do 4 flying laps (plus 1 in & 1 out lap) for the 4 sets they would use up, or they could do a lot of laps on one set to test setups out then do 3 flying laps.

Give them the choice to do it and you'll get cars on track throughout the 1 hour session.

I agree! This used to be my favourtite part. seeing the times tumble and seeing if someone could come out and beat the best time.I liked the fact even though most people came out at the end it seemed to increase the tension.

This one lap thing is IMO rubish. and it messes up the competion. Look at button fastest all weekend one mistake on his 1 lap and he's stuffed. Dont like it.

The 1 hour was pointless, no one went out for the first 30 mins.

I like the fuel rules at the moment, I don't think they should be allowed to refuel between qualifying and race.

Actually I like the whole way it is now as it leasd to some fast cars being put further back and makes for a better race.

Even better would be no qualifing and the cars starting in the reverse order of the way they finished in the previous GP.

The advantage of the current system is that you don't know how much fuel each car has, and therefore there is a bit of extra excitement in the race (and it needs it!).

With this new system the fastest car will be at the front which means that the Ferraris will always be on the front row, and they will procede in to go straight to the flag, only stopping for fuel and new tyres.

If you had unlimited laps for the 2nd qualifying session and if the cars started the 2nd qualifying session with their fuel load for the racesome will want to conserve that load for the race, others however would want to get as near the front as possible. The latter would therefore do more laps to burn off more fuel saving weight and going faster. Would still give a mixed up grid hopefully.

The current problem with F1 is that the best driver is in the best car and putting then at the front will make it even more dull.

Well surely that's right. If you were racing and you had the best car, best prepared team and you were the best driver is it fair to put you at the back of the grid just for entertainment. It's up to to the other teams to stop dicking around and do better job. The Mclaren situation is a classic example They have built 3 cars in the last 15 months, one has never raced and the current one is a sh*tbox. They are now building another car, whcih they hope to do better with. Something is seriously wrong at that outfit.....

I don't think the Q results will be that predictable, for instance the williams may be red hot if it's on low fuel, therefore you may got other teams cropping up as spoilers at some venues - Monaco for instance.

The current Q lash up, is just that. I am quite surprised that they changed it as last year it appeared to work quite well. Anyway, looking forward to seeing what happens.

Did anyone else notice that the new format changed from 2 x 20 mins on Saturday to 2 x 25 mins by Sunday?

I don't know if this was a ITV error, but the rest of the graphic was identical on both days.
