DIY DSLR steadicam/stabilizer

I have a Canon 60D and have been wanting something to stabilise the video shooting function for a little while. I've looked at the DIY build it yourself kits using a grip with universal joint and a bottom weight and I'm sure I could make one - or get the metalwork department in work to help - but it's just finding time. Has anyone done this?

I've also read and seen on youtube lots of good things about the Flycam Nano. It's designed for DV cameras up to 700g (the 60D + battery grip + lens is 1700g) but with correct balancing appears to work with DSLRs. http://youtu.be/H6Glpe4dIXohttp://cheesycam.com/nano-test-60d-24-105mm-f4l/

What do you think? Any alternatives to consider? I'd be happy to spend around £100 although there is a couple of other Flycam models which are designed for heavier kit which are obviously a bit more dosh (next one up is £130 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DSLR-Flycam3000-stabilizer-f...

As an aside, I've currently strapped a couple of potatoes to the bottom of a monopod which works to a certain extent - it reduces the vertical and horizontal movement quite well but doesn't do anything for the twist or vibration. Plus it looks stupid!
