really daft question.....

...raise the compression ratio, sort out the combustion chamber (quite different on a diesel), beef up the bottom end. Yes, it can be done; see the BMC B-series 1500 diesel, or more recently, the Vauxhall diesel from the 80s-90s, which were both basically dieselised petrol engines.
You do need to do a fair bit of work to the head, to provide holes for both the glow plugs and the injectors to poke into, and for a swirl chamber if you're using indirect injection. This makes it kind of a bugger if you can't cast yourself a new head.

If you remember back to when Clarkson went to Cuba and someone had a petrol engine that would start on that and somehow change to diesel. It only did about 20mph.
Didn't see the programme, but that sounds like it may not necessarily have been a compression-ignition engine. You can run a spark-ignition engine on diesel if you can get it to carburate properly, which generally involves heat to compensate for the lower volatility.

Sounds like my da's Grey Ferguson Tractor, started on petrol and when the engine was warm enough it was switched over to TVO (Tractor Vapourising Oil) aka parafin. To assist the vaporising process a simple shield was attached to the manifold which retained heat from the exhaust.
