MK1 Key issue

Hi guys,

Can you please help. I seem to have lost my key to my MK1 MX5.... After looking around the house I have come to the conclusion I have shut them in the boot (putting back some WD40)

Not a problem... Ill just use the spare keys. Aahhh. They don't open the boot!!!

My own fault but can any one help 1. To tell me how to get the boot open (no internal release I can see!!) 2. Get a key that allows me to open the boot (just simply copy the master key? )

My mk.1 has a boot release in the little armrest/glove box thingy between the seats - next to the petrol release lever... Sure yours doesn't have one?

Just had a look.... only have a Lever for fuel cap and that is it. Any other suggestions?

are you sure? both MK1's that we've had, a UK one and an import have the boot release in the centre console. Don't know of any other way to get in. Hopefully if someone does know of a secret way they won't be silly enough to post it on here.

one petrol release and that is it.... In my Full Deren Brown Knowledge I am now sure the keys are in the boot.!!! So frustrating.

Do the spare keys work the other locks?
Have you tried them both ways up in the boot?

Spare Key will open both doors and start car. But the boot...up down, left right. Does not want to know. :-(

Sounds like a replacement lock in the boot? Ordering a main key from dealer isn't going to work

If you a an AA/RAC member then give them a call. They know how to get in to the boot ;-)

It's curious that you don't have a boot release in the centre console - Surely this is standard on all cars? This, and the fact the key doesn't fit the boot, would suggest to me that at some point the lock to the boot has been changed, possibly due to being broken into, and they couldn't get the boot release to work, so removed the lever from the centre console?

Or am I reading into this too much?

The boot release wasn't on all cars. A lot of earlier and lower spec cars (UK & JDM) didn't have it.

If you can open the drivers door and remove the lock cylinder then you should be able to see the key code stamped on the cylinder. You can then have a new key cut from this code by your local Mazda dealer, Dandy Cars or R & R Security.

The second key is a valet key that only opens the doors and starts the car. The boot, centre console and glovebox cannot be unlocked with the valet key. Very early Mk1 models did not have remote boot release.

Good point! I forgot about the valet key!!! Does your spare key work in the glove box and centre console? If not it's probably a valet key and not a spare main key.

If yours is a UK car with the original locks Mazda can cut a replacement from the details on their database if you supply the VIN number

I think the lacking boot release is just a thing with some of the earlier cars as has been said. Mine is a 1990 and only has the petrol cap release.

Mine was 1996 and only had the fuel cap puller in the centre console.
