Cayo Coco, Cuba - Anyone Been?
Discussion
HI there,
I went there over xmas 2008 with my boyfriend and his family.
What time of year are you looking at? We had some great weather but it did get chilly early evening and very windy by the sea. Cayo Coco's shores are lapped by the Atlantic rather the warmer caribbean sea, to the south of Cuba. You will meet many Canadians and Brits there.
Before booking any hotels, be sure to check the reviews on Trip Advisor. We stayed at the Blau colonial, which was nice, small though. Cayo Coco has only 6 or 7 ( as of 2008) hotels and any entertainment or nightlife will only be what the hotel offers. The island is purpose made for tourists. Locals arent allowed to live there. It is connected to mainland cuba by a causeway, quite a nice drive along it.
If you planning any trips then the main cities are quite a drive away. If you fancy Havana, then its a flight away im afraid. We didnt bother.
Overall, we had a really great, relaxing fortnight. Good all inclusive hotel (the best Havana rum ) a nice beach and plenty of time to unwind.
I'm happy to answer any questions.

Loved it.
Went in 2008 as well, and we've just booked to go back next year for a friends wedding.
The beaches are great and the water is nice and shallow for quite a distance, one of my favourite things was walking right out in the morning, very refreshing.
It's hot and humid but if you are lying in the sun, the beach is the place to do it where there is a breeze. I didn't last too long lying by the pool.
We went to Havana for 3 nights and went to the Tropicana Club which is definitely worth the trip. Did some rum tours, smoked some Cuban cigars, did most of the sights really.
One thing that became annoying, which was more Havana than anywhere else, was the constant grabbing at you to have pictures with 'authentic Cubans' and then demanding money for it. If you are buying cigars then buy them from proper shops as there are a lot of fakes about, probably made out of trees.
It's an interesting place, definitely recommend you go. The old cars, the people and the culture, it's like going back in time really.
Make sure you take cash with you, I had all sorts of problems as my credit cards are Amex and Visa, neither of which were accepted due to their connections with America, same went for my Visa debit card. Luckily the OH had a Barclay Card so i could transfer money over to her for her to pay for things. You can't fly into Cuba via an American airport IIRC.

We went to Cayo Coco in summer 2009. We stayed at the Trypp hotel, which was a little tired, but perfectly ok. The beach was lovely and the food fine. As pointed out here already, Havana is a flight away, but well worth considering. If it really is a trip of a lifetime, it would seem a shame to miss Havana - it really is very Cuban and quite unique. We went to Varadero a few years back and did Havana then.
We did go one one great over-nighter from Cayo Coco, to Trinidad down south, stayed in a proper soviet built block hotel and then had a fanatstic day out aound a rain forest the next day. Everything was included and was reasonably priced.
Cuba is ace. Having been to a lot of places with the Navy for 15 years, I can say it really is different - but for how long?
