Howdy Folks,

Just been messing with my car ready for a track day next weekend and have noticed that my front tyres are worn a lot worse than my rears. They only have 2K on them, but I did my first track a few weeks back and I am guessing my novice driving is to blame.

Anyway, the front passenger side is far worse and I guess this is down to the majority of the corners being right handers. Also, the wear is in the inside of the tyre, not the outer edge? So, should I swap the front with the rear or swap them round on the same axle. I am doing the same track next weekend, so the passenger side will take another beating (although hopefully a little less this time).

I am using BS RE070's...

Thanks all...

You need to get a geometry setup done if you haven't already. At least getting it checked out is a good step forward. Get it to a tyre fitter that uses a Hunter 4 wheel alignment suite. They can check tracking, caster and camber angles and set everything back to OEM settings unless you've had some sort of fast road geo setup on the car that you know of.

I would expect the fronts to be worn on the outsides not the insides as subarus are set up for understeer out of the box unless the tracking is way out or the front end has been set up with a lot of negative camber in which case you would normally see wear on the insides if you travel a lot in straight lines i.e. A-roads or motorway travel. Changing front Camber settings also changes tracking.

In any case best get it checked out.

The geo was done the other week at Elite and they are good. I had a prodrive setup (negative camber I think).

The more I think about it, for the first bit of the day I was getting a lot of tyre squeal. Of course, I worked out how to stop that and at which point there was less blue smoke and burning rubber. To make it worse it was an airfield which are far harder than tarmac. I also got a bit carried away and spent 30 mins solid at the end of the day going potty. In fact, I did about 80 laps throughout the day - I have no idea if this sounds a lot rofl

I have swapped them over (right to left) and I will see how I get on next weekend. There is no rotation markings on my tyres so I figure this is fine.

I guess I need to think about getting a second set of tyres and rims for track days!

Cracking good idea. A set to get there and a set to use on track.

You should be able to hire one of the circuit's garage/pit for not much money so you can change wheels. Take a decent trolley jack with you and keep it all in the garage while you're on track.

How bald can track day tyres be? I mean, I guess they can be under the legal limit...

You're fine swapping RE070s on the same axle, they're not unidirectional.

Track tyres can have as little tread as you like, in fact you don't want too much tread on a dry track as the tread blocks flex and the tyre overheats/breaks down very quickly.

Sadly, from experience, if you are going to use track wheels, take chain and locks to protect your wheels/tools when left in the pit garage

Paul,
Assuming you did Brands for the track day it is normal for the front left to wear heavily on the outside. most tracks have more right hand bends than left hand ends but being an indy brands has them more often.

I have run the same car with both Prodrive settings and T25 Setup and on both the wear was front left.

When I still used an impreza I ended up getting a spare set of rims/ tyres and swapped the fronts to rears halfway through and then swapped them over (left to right) for the next time (They were directionals), rather than waering out my more expensive normal road tyres.

No, an airfield called Woodbridge (which is clockwise so loads of right handers). I have a spare set of rims and tyres now which I will use for the road smile

I went again last weekend and now am the proud owner of 4 BS REO70's with about 2mm of tread left (I swapped them round a few times throughout the day).

I run slicks. So yes.

EDIT - but not all track day operators allow slicks. So best to ring the company you're going with and ask them if they need your tyres to be road legal or not.

Once they are slick you could always borrow a tyre tread cutter and create your own custom treads.

Think of the cost savings!! hehe

My fronts have worn like this too, I'm on coilovers with anti lift and thicker ARB's. My rear tyres are fine though, they have worn completely level. It's taken me about 10K miles to get them down though.
