If you have a vehicle over 25 years old, does anyone fancy trying to get the government to re instate the rolling 25 year tax exemption again, and while we are at it get the LPG rebate scheme extended to cover vehicles over 25 years old.

If you want to support this worthy campaign pop along to www.geocities.com/dambustersnats and register your support. Also write to your local MP.

if we shout loud enough we will be heard.

Don't fancy your chances. The 25 year exemption was a try out to see if a no pay tax disc system would work should VED be replaced by fuel tax. The group was chosen as it is a shrinking group which would cost the Treasury less and less as time goes by. The proposal to abolish VED failed because of the strength of the rural lobby who would be greatest loosers should fuel costs go up as they have little in the way of public transport to fall back on.

Do you think the Treasury would agree to roll forward the age exemption just to loose revenue? After all what is it about older cars that means they should avoid tax? It seems more likely that they will increase tax on older vehicles using the excuse that they tend to be environmentally inferior to newer vehicles.

I wish you every success but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a thumbs up.

The argument was that these older cars are generally only used to attend shows and meets and do very limited mileage, classic car policy for 1500 or 3000 miles so why should somebody pay for tax on two cars when one is only used occassionaly.

Its a shame the rolling tax stopped, I now stands at registered before 1 st January 1973, one of my cars was registered in march ’73, just my luck. Still I’ve got a 1965 and a 1969, it’s really nice to go down and get those free tax discs.

With respect that is the arguement for second car tax reduction not old car tax reduction. Using that criterion most Ferraris & Lambos should be VED exempt.

True, I personally believe that VED should be abolished anyway, fuel tax is a far more equitable solution (despite the fact we already have it).

I can personally assure you that most people in the DTp Policy Branch at Marsham St were similarly in favour of abolition when the matter was live.
