I am still looking for my S3,(having missed Allisons a month or so ago)and have just spent 3 hours on the M25 to view one, it was immaculate inside and out , then i got on my back and had a look underneath, the chassis rail running under the cills wasjust a mass of rust, all the powder coating had gone and the rail was virtually de-laminating.The guy selling said that he had a new MOT and nothing was mentioned about the chasis.
I have looked at a few now not as bad as this, but lacking in other areas, I am looking forward to care and maintainence but do not want a project!
I will spend £8K top, should I keep looking or go and restore my MGB!

I had a similar experience when I was looking for my s3. The rear outrigger and the sill rail had parted company when I pointed it out to the vendor he too said that the car had just been mot'd. Needless to say I walked away from it. Having said all that I bought my present car knowing that I would have to scrape it's bottom, hammerite and waxoil. I did the work myself apart from waxoil spraying and despite much flaking powder coating and some rust flakes the chassis is structurally sound and I now have peace of mind having inspected all the underpinnings.Hope this helps with your deliberations.

I dont think you will find one without any flaking powdercoat. THey will all be rusty unless they have been treated - I have like you seen a lot of cars lacking in one area or another. The lowest mileage car I looked at had only done 18K but still needed a good brush down and a coat of hammerite (shame it was lacking in other areas). The right car will be out there - somewhere - just dont give up and ask the vender detailed questions.....good luck!
