Rev Counter not working

When I bought my S1 one of the many things that didnt work was the rev counter. I bought another off ebay and that doesnt work either. Now I am not sure if I have two duff rev counters or some issue with the wiring. There is certainly some evidence that the wiring in that area has been 'messed' with but the connections do appear correct. Is there any way to test the rev counter off the car, or any issue with the wiring that anyone else has experienced? If it does turn out to be duff instruments, does anybody out there have a known working rev counter they might sell?
