Not a nice topic i admit but one that touches my heart as i feel its about time animal rights started to come into force. I personally would like to thank the Dutch Goverment for waking up to these needless, horrible and painful ways of killing an animal. Lets hope the other EU countries follow as well.

It makes my blood boil seeing these Muslims and Jews in Europe moaning about religous freedoms, What about the animals rights? If they dont like it there are plenty of flights leaving for Tel Aviv or Riyadh where they can p**s off to. rage

Im not sure what the UK laws are on this but hopefully an MP with at least half a brain can make this law applicable in this country if it hasn't already been enforced.

I'd kill a cow with a blunt spoon to get meat if I had nothing else to hand, but I have to say that backward practices are generally left in the backward places of origin and in modern cultures should be gently adjusted to make use of modern more humane practices.

Absolutely. If they are unhappy that it infringes "religious freedom" then they are perfectly free to utilise freedom of movement.

Shame it'll never happen here.

They should perhaps look first at some of the awful practices in 'civilised' abbatoirs in the UK where animals are treated like crap whilst they are still alive.

Why no do them the courtesy of stunnign them all at once.

I have seen halal slaughter that seemed far more humane to me, the animals were bought out once at a time and appeared to go down relativley painlesly and quickly (this was abroad mind on a farm)

Just out of interest, what exactly is it that you find barbaric about the Islamic and Jewish method of slaughter?

You mean barbaric as in crude, unsophisticated and primitive?

Crude: Hang an animal upside down and kill it slowly whilst it's still conscious.
Unsophisticated: Stunning devices exist for humane killing yet are shunned.
Primitive: Based on the ramblings of some medieval shepherd.

A step in the right direction, but I see they have left a 'get out of jail' card in there to be played out. I don't see it happening personally. European law will get involved and the whole human/relgious rights thing will rumbel on for years, cost millions and someone will come up with a way to still let it carry on because no one has the guts to stand up to religion and just this is backward in 2011.
The sheer stupidity just to please stupid religious men.

Want to see how they do it Indonesian style ? http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/special_eds/2011053...

I am a battery hen
on me back theres not a germ
I've never scratch a farmyard
I've never pecked a worm
I've never had the sun, to warm me feathers through
Eggs I lay, every day, for the like of you.

So when you has em scrambled,
Piled up on yer plate.
It's me you ought to thank for that
I never lays em late.
I always lays em regular
I always lays em right
I never lays em brown
I always lays em white

I see the time and motion clock is saying nearly noon
I expect me squirt of water will come flying at me soon
and then me spray of pellets will nearly break me leg
and i'll bite the wire netting and lay one more bloody egg.

(Not bad from memory) smile

In terms of crude, I have no idea who told you that the animal is killed slowly, in fact its of utmost importance that the animal be killed as quickly as possible with a very sharp blade, giving the animal an instant death.

Stunning devices are not necessarily humane, the two methods commonly used are the captive bolt pistol method and the electrified water bath method. The captive bolt pistol method is used mainly on sheep and works by giving an electrical current to the head, making the sheep unconscious through direct brain injury, more often than not, the animals are not stunned properly causing them more pain. Also, the use of this method actively causes seizures which can only mean more pain for the animal.

The electrified water bath method is used for poultry and works by hanging the birds upside down and passing them over and electric water bath so there heads are submerged. This is an ineffective method as sometimes the head does not make full contact with the water and thus there is a partial stun causing pain, and also meaning that there are living birds passing through the mechanical blades. Additionally, it is hard to take into account the variation in bird size, fat etc. so many abbatoirs may over stun the birds causing fits and so on.

I suggest you look at actual unbiased scientific research which is easily available, especially where actual EEG readings have been taken which give you a direct correlation to the amount of the pain the animal is suffering. I know the ritual slaughter method can look fairly gruesome but the science proves otherwise.

Under UK law religious exemption is only permissible if the meat is exclusively for supply to followers of that religion.

Currently this is widely flouted and this amounts to religious discrimination.

Halal or kosher butchers should refuse to serve non-members of their faith. But they serve anyone.

Restaurants shouldn't be serving Kosher or Halal to non-members of their faith.
Yet when was the last time you were refused service at a curry house claiming their food is Halal?

Increasingly works canteens are run by contract companies. These frequently display signs claiming they use Halal meat.

This is permitting discrimination against any other faith. Muslims and Jews aren't allowed to eat each others food.

We have tried tolerance of religious diets, and the freedom has been abused.

Therefore the legal exemption should be withdrawn.

Not for me thanks, I only eat free range and organic meat. Yes it's more expensive but I'd rather eat less meat than be a part of animal cruelty.

Get in there Holland, let's hope the UK follows suit.
