2011 RAF Typhoon display - suspended

"Display flying is currently suspended. The Display Team will be attending its planned shows throughout the summer with our Public Relations Trailer so there will still be an opportunity to meet the team and pick up our free brochures and posters. The intent is to reinstate the display if and when operational tasking allow."

Yep, and national pride has been banned, and think of the carbons. Every display not flown counters the effect of 0.0000000000000000000001% of a new Chinese power station.Typhoon Display was cancelled March/April time when Libya kicked off. There are not enough crews to support a Display season as well as Northern and Southern QRA, Falkland Air Defence, and Libya. They have managed to get two for static at Waddington and one at the moment static at RIAT. The RAF display was never the most dynamic displays, and it is regarded that the plane could do a lot more than it was put through. Rafale and F-16s from Belgium and the Netherlands are widely regarded as being more impressive.
The USAF have specific Demo Teams allocated for displays. The A-10 Demo Team will be coming accross from the US, to display at RIAT. I don't think any other specific demo teams are coming over.
The bulk of the fast jets will be from European Airforces, Yeovilton, at this stage has managed to secure a Mig-29 display from Poland!! Impressive as RIAT haven't managed to secure that. Yeovilton has also booked the Sea Vixen, much more impressive than the Typhoon, due to it's size, presence and shape.
The American Contingent at RIAT this year is much reduced. At this stage no B1, B52 only on static, F-15s (static) cancelled. No F-22, as these are apparently all grounded t the moment.
The Thunderbirds are at Waddington this weekend.

Re location: Most of the aircraft we get over tend to take the following route. North to South and vice versa using Helmsley as a nav point. They seem to operate in a in a corridor 1-2 miles east to west of Helmsley. By the duration of the passes I would imagine they get up to Cleveland and then turn back for home.
The Typhoons tend to stick with either HA stuff or very occasional air combat stuff - last time they did this the noise stopped the town it was superb. They're pretty rare though unlike the F-15s.
On the topic of F-15s, they are by a long way the most entertaining to watch as they practise their low level stuff over the moors. I've seen them low enough on a few occasions to see the pilot. A close second are the Chinooks, which also practise their low level stuff. On more than a few occasions I've actually been looking down on them as they hug the valley bottoms; had the odd wave too from the aircrew. They are also surprisingly agile for such a big old bus. A couple of times I've seen them stood on the rotor tip pulling a very tight turn.
We also get: Hercs, Tornadoes, (Sadly no more) Harriers, Hawks, those buzzy turbo prop trainers, and Lynxes. For some reason we rarely get the Apaches despite a few been located at the local base.

It makes you wonder what will be left for the RAF to display in years to come. No Typhoon this year, the Harrier has been (disgracefully) retired, no more Nimrod, Jaguar retired, Tornado on the way out.
It really does sadden me the way that successive governments have brought the Royal Air Force ( we are in real danger of no longer being a force) to it's knees ( and don't get me started on the Royal Navy).
I remember as a youngster going to airshows in the 80's and seeing Jaguars, Lightnings, Tornados, Buccaneers and the mighty Vulcan displaying and showing what a real force the RAF was.
Whilst I totally accept and understand that theatre operations come first at the expense of displaying aircraft to the public, it is the massive cuts to the budgets that have left us in this predicament.
Personally I don't get a lot of enjoyment from seeing a Tucano, Hawk and Tutor as well as a few helicopters displaying and representing our Air Force.
On the bright side it's only a matter of days until Flying Legends. Piston engined heaven!!

Blackpool 'airshow' is pretty feeble these days, we barely get those. What irritates me is that despite the Tyhpoon being built literally up the road, they don't include it in the airshow. You'd think they'd want to show it off properly (pas a display, not flying out from Warton occasionally) to the community that helps make them!It makes you wonder what will be left for the RAF to display in years to come. If you don't mind me asking, were about's on the Moors are you mate? I live on the Moors too you see, and occasionally we get pinged by the odd Tornado, (I am in the Esk Valley) but I've yet to see a Typhoon.Edited by rhinochopig on Wednesday 29th June 19:52
