Had lovely new discs & pads on the scooby this weekend, but how many miles should I put on them before I can consider them 'run in'?

I've got a track day next weekend , and the last thing I want are warped discs at the end of the day!

I was just told to take it easy for a few hundred miles.

Modern brake discs and pads will work fine straight out of the box. The first application will take off any finish from the disc (to reduce rusting) after that you can work them as hard as they're designed for.

Hmm, was advised by the dealer that I should run them in. Perhaps they were just saying this so I take the top layer off before going mad. Although, having said this my wife's car had problems with warped discs several time but this was probably due to shitty parts rather than anything else.

I was told the same thing, run them in for a hundred miles or so. Can only assume that it is to give them sufficient use so that the surfaces conform to each other to give maximum braking effort.

A hundred miles down the motorway is not the same as 100 miles along country roads.... Just a thought IMHO. A few fairly heavy (but not emergency) stops from NSL should do the trick, just make sure the road is clear before you do it, just in case......

Adrian's favourite brake theory page - you want the bit called 'prevention'.

Thanks for pointing that out Adrian, haven't seen such a detailed description before and it clears up a lot of the mystery. Incidentally, Tarox and Greenstuff pads both come with the same bedding in instructions that Carroll gives.

Cheers,

And boy do I need those 'clean up your discs' instructions. Since Folembray, my discs are feeling distinctly secondhand...
