Has anybody ever had this done? I've got to go in a couple of weeks and don't particularly like the sound of having a tube inserted into my stomach via my nose for 24 hours.

did it whilst a medical student (research study for cash)
Insertion is a pain for a minute or two, then it's forgotten about.
Only problem was sticking to their research rules at the time re alcohol.

Ie I couldn't have any smile

So as a medical student you actually volunteered to have this procedure done? I'd want a fair bit of cash if it wasn't necessary for my health.

I can't see it being very nice having a thin tube pushing against the back of your throat for 24 hours. Unlike my girlfriend I have a very strong gag reflex!

I've had an NG tube in before, you honestly won't feel it after the first 10 minutes, you'll forget it's there. The initial actually putting it in bit is Not Fun but takes an absolute maximum of 90 seconds if you have fairly typical anatomy.
Good luck!

My most recent endoscopy (actually gastroscopy = using an endoscope to look at oesophagus and stomach rather than, say, colonoscopy eek ) was a fortnight ago. The sedation is pretty impressive, I can't remember being knocked out even! Do bear in mind that some people really do need a full 24 hours.of happy snoozing before they're back to normal afterwards - I did, had had the impression that I'd be fine the same evening and for me very much not the case. You might recover fast, or you might be like me and completely zonked the next day - no way of telling in advance so make allowances just in case, assume that you'll not be up to much 'til Wednesday.

I hope it all goes really smoothly, the nurses on the unit I had mine at were all fantastic. Good luck!

Well I had the endoscopy this morning and it was 20 times easier than the last one. Last time I was retching badly. I did think the last bloke was a bit ham-fisted mind you.

So perhaps the sedation did help. Though I think it must give you a big hit for a couple of minutes while they insert the endoscope because I barely felt sedated while being wheeled into the ward afterwards and certainly dont now 90 minutes after the sedation. I'll be back working shortly.

So all-in-all a doddle this time around.

Thank you for the helpful comments above. Just the ph test now and I'm feeling more relaxed about that now smile

Edited for sedation-related typos and speling smile

I thought this was going to be about a PistonHeads way of working out how well-built you were via the oesophagus.
