I need to add an extra piece to a photo before printing...

I am a complete novice at this stuff! I have a portrait photo of my daughter that I want to print on a square 30cm x 30cm canvas. It doesn't look right if I crop it square. I have decided that I want to add a small section of white background to the left hand side of the photo, but have no idea how to do it

Can anyone give some advice on what software I need to do this please?

You can do this in MS paint.

In Photoshop this is Image > Canvas size. You set the amount you want extra and (perversely) click the right arrow to put the new part on the left.

Would it not have looked better centering the photo on the canvas , rather than adding to one side?

Normally yes, but the original image we are using is already off centre to the left, so it worked perfectly.
