I am currently helping a mate find a decent 21" monitor! He has limited space available and needs a hi res!
He doesn't mind haviing CRT or LCD, but which one is better?!?!
Are any particular brands better than others and what are the best CRT and LCD available?!?
I haven't had much experience with LCD's. But I've heard they are pretty good!

Cheers
Stuart!

LCD are good but are extremely expensive in the larger sizes,

A good 21" CRT in my opinion would either Be a Sony trinitron monitor, or an ilyma 21" both are purfectly flat and can be brought for around £550 - £700 depending on how far he wants to go. i think the hihest res of the sony in 2800 x 2400 pixels but you will need a bloody good graphics card for that..

you can get budget 21" which are more than cabable try AOC or Hansol

or he could go for a dual monitor setup with 2 x 19" monitors for the same cost.

if costs is an issue then go for a ex-lease stck item from dell of compaq. these can be got for £250 and are rebadged sony trinitron items

Hope this helps

I personally find that CRT are better on the eyes than the LCD monitors when you spend a lot of time in front of it. LCD is a great space saver but I ended up swapping my 17" LCD monitor for a 21" monitor at work and was a lot happier.

Still for the home it would be a cool solution.

The Dell laptop I'm writing this on has a 15" screen with 1400 x 1050. It's so sharp it doesn't physically need to be any bigger.

However - if you are using something like Photoshop then an LCD screen may be no good for you. Shadow detail, highlight detail and colour accuracy all leave a lot to be desired compared to a CRT. Biggest problem is it can't be tweaked as it all changes with the viewing angle (side to side and especially up and down). This is not really noticable with Windows, Word, Explorer, etc. but when working on images this is a serious problem.

Hmmm - I found the opposite. I was geeting quite bad headaches with extensive CRT use which was cured once I started using my laptop screen. I suspect it was the flicker on the CRT screen, the laptop screen has no flicker.

All down to personal preference and experience I guess.....

I'll see what he says! He's limited to on space just now, he can only get one monitor on his desk! He suggested to me an LCD monitor, I have used a couple and found them quite good! But always found CRT better!
He seems to have endless financial resources! The system I built for him cost him upwards of £1500 without a monitor! Anyway, his decision at the end of it all, so I'll pass on comments from here and see what he says!!

I've got 2 LCD monitors, but rarely use the second one as I've done what I needed to in terms of our company website and our accounting package. Both built by me(!!), although the website did recieve a little help from a friend (for the ecommerce side) who insisted I advertise him on the website!

The LCD monitors are not as bad as my laptop, which really be relied on for colours as it is totally different from even slightly different angles. I mean even tilting your head a little makes yellow go a funny dark yellowy/orangy etc. But the LCD's at work don't have that affect as much and are reasonable, although the CRT was much better. I actually think I preferred the CRT as it was a lot clearer to think about it, but the LCD's save a lot of space and are supposed to be better for your eyesight(?). I just to feel totally ill after using the CRT for a lengthy period of time.

I think sony monitors are brilliant and can recommend them wholeheartedly. Try dabs.com, they are usually well priced and can obtain anything.

I work in Photoshop at work doing high resolution retouching. Every year I have a choice of any high end equipment, and have stuck with a traditional CRT.

On a CRT screen you can easily focus on the grain of the scanned film and make out the texture's and colours very easily. On an LCD screen you find yourself looking at screen pixels, rather than the actual film detail itself.

Tvradict,

I have the luxury of a 19" Compaq LCD at work. At home I have a (cheap) AOC 19" and the difference is very noticable, particularly eyestrain. I run both at 1200 by 1600.

I don't do a shed load of graphics mainly just using PhotoShop for buttons, backgrounds etc. But I do spend all day trawling through lines of code, which requires a great deal of eye strain.

Bottom line, If I had the money I would definitely go for an LCD. On the other hand similar costs to a high end LCD will buy you a nice Sony Trinitron (which someone else has recommended). So you could compromise size, ie smaller LCD vs larger CRT for similar money.
