Enjoyed episode 1 of the second series but can someone please give a summary of the first series that I missed?

Who is the woman in the mental hospital? Why did Luther help her and what was their relationship in series 1?

What happened to his wife?

Why is Luther's colleagues reputation tarnished? What did they do in series 1?

Anything else I need to know?
